I've always seen Covadonga as the Spanish Alpe. Not monstrous, but seen very often and generally good racing because the hardest part of the climb is quite some way from the end.Wiki says it was designed for Vuelta to have something like Alpe dHuez, Ventoux and Mortirolo
You have obviously never seen the fabulous Tour Of Thailand.Is there a UCI limit to how hard a climb is allowed to be to race up?
Obviously this/zonc are on the upper limit of acceptability and I imagine at a certain point it becomes a farce.

I suppose can they and would they are two different things then, posted in one of the giro stages a while ago;

Too steep for all the logistics a race needs.Has that climb ever been used in a race ?
They all know it's gonna be tough to stay away, thus the reluctance in making a breakaway.

Ah, but the Zonc was already conquered in the Giro Rosa two years before Angliru in the Vuelta.Mortirolo triggered Angliru, and then Il Giro upped the game with Zoncolan
I bet Froome is regretting gifting the win on Angliru to Contador a few years ago now. It was a nice gesture, but given what's happened since, he may never be in shape to win on it again.Forum crash chances if victorious:
** *** Froome
**** Kuss, Woods
*** Van Garderen, Valverde
Looking at the forecast tomorrow, seems cloudy with little chance of rain, sadly this is probably the last race with a high chance of something spectacular happening until Richie darts up an Australian government approved Willunga Hill in a few months time.
... and not even paved properly just a weird double track pavement...Too steep for all the logistics a race needs.
I know it's rideable, no idea if it's been used in any sort of non-gimmick race - LFR says record is 1h24 up the climb
