The Giro was far worse. 'This descent is too dangerous! we refuse to race down it' 'how about we shorten the stage instead but the descent stays?' 'DEAL!!'

I'm all for giving the riders what they want when it comes to safety. but they do make themselves look like idiots at times. But better to be an idiot than in a ditch. I don't mind what they're doing today, no-ones going to remember this stage in a few weeks. They identified a problem before the stage started, did something about it & will still put on a show for the fans watching from the road. A good solution.

F*ck me. Just gross.

Some of these w*nkers in the peloton won't be happy until stages are on wide straight roads with an uphill where they unleash their watts.

Shame on the whingers who played the 'safety card' & cried to get the GC times cancelled.
The logical endpoint to this is a Grand Tour in UAE and Saudi with the big mountain climbs having motorway standard tarmac and width the size of a small ocean.

A decent looking early race stage has been rendered a pointless and unpleasant club ride in wet weather gear for zero gain as the stage win will be a tainted prize.

So what happens in the fight for red in this situation?

DSM and Movistar guys to sprint at the 9k to go mark because first one gets the red jersey?

Or maybe Movistar isn't interested in red at this point and has assured DSM they will not try to take it. (But they will probably still try to keep Mas in front and out of harm's way so they might take it 'accidentally')

Only if they could get a time gap, the stage result is still settled at the finish.

"A road bike race is an event where people competing against each other cycle out in all kinds of terrains, road conditions and weather. It's up to the riders to negotiate any extra leg braces."

This has been my POV since I was a kid in the 70s.
However, yesterday was different with unequal competition, riders starting at different timeslots and very different circumstances.

Today they are back to normal. All equally worthless, deemed to obey the circumstances.
Stop nanny nonsense.

I am more worried whether the finish will be rideable if the rain continues unabated.

And this is a different issue, i.e. if there's torrents of water in quasi flood type conditions, then stop the stage.

But if "danger" means GC teams are worried there "could" be crashes on wet, slippery roads, then the solution is simple: ride slower and accept the time loss versus riders who take some risks.

If only it worked like that. Tao, G, Roglic had a big crash in the Giro taking it easy peasy on a descent. Ended Tao's season.
