Now Visma could have the gap at 2 minutes already, they’re unnecessarily helping out riders who want to get in the break.

They are strong enough to do it like this. And as everyone knows that, it also credibly signals that it's futile to try to today
True, just seems like an unnecessary risk to me. Gap 1min30 to 2 would still see them comfortably in control and discourage attacks. Although maybe with tomorrow looking like a stage for breakaway people will decide to save their legs now.

I don't think Visma were going to give a rider on UAE who is quite close on GC much leeway on any stage, regardless of their initial plans.
Seriously? Soler isn't a threat to Vingegaard. They could give him 5 minutes and he'd take them off on this course. Only half of that time on Angliru.

They want the stage.

Time gaps can spiral out of control and people profiting from said time gaps can prove tougher nuts to crack than expected. See also: Ben O'Connor, Sepp Kuss, Thomas Voeckler, David Arroyo, Oscar Pereiro. You should never plan for exclusively the most likely scenario.
