Okay....

I follow this stuff pretty close. I don't remember seeing it but that certainly does not mean Riis did not orchestrate this move.

If he did, and I am saying "if", then FC needs to get back in the Riis fold ASAP. And I owe Hog an apology. And I probably should STFU and enjoy the bike race.

FWIW, I don't think he ordered that attack but, like normal, I reserve the right to be wrong.

I also read that Riis made the call.

I'll third that. I also read about this. And it was reported on, not just forum banter.

I also recall that that is when I started seeing forumites question his tactical abilities. I wonder why

"I told him to attack on the radio. As soon as I saw that Boonen was not on his wheel, I said: 'Now you go' ," Riis explained.

"A rider like him, when he goes, it's because he goes to win, not for fun. I knew it was the right moment and that he was riding to win the race. Otherwise I'd have stopped him immediately."

Pressed by several Belgian journalists, Riis could not resist having a dig at Tom Boonen.

"Boonen is strong but Cancellara is better. He's great," he said with total admiration.

"Boonen made mistakes during the race. How many? Two can be too many. I think if you want to win this race you have to stay calm, relaxed and not stressed. Then go when you have to go.

"The problem for the others is that Fabian goes fast, even on his own. We know that and it's a bonus to have. We know he can go from far away, too, so we use this as part of our strategy. Not many riders can do that."

Well, please accept my apology.

I don't remember seeing that in all honesty.

That gives me a bit more to chew on concerning Riis. That was a pretty ballsy call.

Alrighty then. Just for fun though, had Riis called for FC to attack at the RVV last year would he have won?:D

I'll show myself out....

Wow, brilliant tactics to attack 50km out against a strong group of what, 7 or 8 riders.

I am sure Cancellara could have won with a lot less risk that year.

All hail the bald genius...

:) By the time Canc got to Camphin en Pevele he had 3 minutes.

He could have double flatted, had a bike change, stopped for coffee and still won easily. Not too much risk in that.

Or Hushovd and the rest could have been a bit braver instead of ****ting their pants and following Boonen.

a 50km TT of 1 against 6 or 7 wouldn't exactly be the easiest way to win a race

To be fair I think Riis made the call to break Boonen. I don’t think he would have thought Canc was going to solo alone to the end. I think he would have thought it was a perfect time to attack and drop Bonnen then work out final selection. As it turned out Canc put the heat on so hard he dropped everyone.

Doesn't the article imply that Riis figured they wouldn't work with Boonen? IIRC post-race there was much commentary regarding racing for second place from the riders (Thor, Flecha and Boonen I believe) and of course here.

Yep. It's still a ballsy call.

I'd bet Riis was thinking that none of the other fav's in that group would ride leaving the chase to Boonen, which is what happened more or less.

Canc can't go to the line with Boonen and Hushovd still there.

Riis knew that Cancellara was stronger than Boonen in a 1-1 "time trial". He also knew that Boonen was so much stronger than everyone else in the group that they would not assist Boonen particularly much with the chasing. Also the guys in the group were mostly guys with little to no winner's mentality who all seemed to rate podium positions a little too highly. It was just a brilliant move.

The group was 16 riders including Cancellara plus 3 more ahead that he passes.

It's amateur hour on this thread. Few too many posters rewriting history in their heads.

I love to see Canc back with Riis. I think he has to do it. He working with Grand Tour heads at RsL. They really don't care for the one day race.

I'm serious when I say this but they need Lance's tactics. Lance was a lot of things but he wasn't stupid. He'd give Fabs the right words.

Tommeke rode for the win, while Thor's ride was a classic example of wheelsucking.

I put Boonen in that list as a commenter he *****ed that everyone else wanted to ride for second. Draw your own conclusion as to who he was talking about.

I watched the video, there were 16 riders. Obviously Cancellara's attack blew it apart so the chasing group was not that strong as a bunch got left behind after Boonen started to chase.

In other words. Without Riis, Cancellara is screwed. Bring him back to Saxo, let him be the ONE leader, and watch him rack up points. (Lol don't actually think this would be remotely possible)

Canc's attacks remind me of the 40 year old guy who leaves his wife to chase 21 year old girls.

The idea is great in concept and sound in theory but when implemented it looks ridiculous and rarely succeeds.

Here we go again, like a broken record. Rarely succeeds? Not if you have cash!!!! LOL!!!
