Because Menchov didnt produce as good results in Gts as he has the years before.
And I know there are reasons for like he wasnt motivated and he was strong in the last week of the Vuelta etc.
But the undelying fact was that he wasnt capable of putting himself to that GT winning level as otherwise he would have.

Exactly the same can be said about Evans in 2010. And then he wins the Tour in 2011.

Same age as Menchov is now too.

So try again.

Oh and heres a fun quote about cobo that could have been made last year to prove it was absolutely impossible for him to win the vuelta

Because Cobo didnt produce as good results in Gts as he has the years before.

Its also why valverde did not win the 09 vuelta.

Oh wait.

It's funny how this poll trends. I remember at one point 36% of people who voted said Wiggins was going to win TdF, then after Evans showed great form in stage 1 of Dauphine, his poll just jumped massively and ate up a lot of Wiggins' percentage.

Now Tony Martin had a good TT, one more person voted him to win TdF, after only 5 people pegged him to win the Tour for the longest time.

This is why I keep the poll open until after the Tour finishes, I'm sure the percentages will shift sharply as the weeks advance. I'm fairly confident one of the 10 I posted will actually win the Tour.

I've seen you (The Hitch) say quite a few things in a couple of posts about Evans having a bad tour in 2010.

But he crashed out in the yellow jersey, and i will always admire the way he still finished the stage.

He was winning the tour when he crashed out!

Saying he underperformed because of injury is bad???

Oh the humanity:rolleyes:

Probably good for Menchov that Galimzyanov got popped. Means they can build the Tour team round him entirely. Dunno what the climbing squad they have is like though without Purito and Moreno. Caruso would be top mountain domestique?

Also Spilak could be pretty strong. I guess we'll have to wait till he does Suisse.

It's not like Gamimzyanov would have had a train regardless, probably just Isaychev to protect him, who might go to support Freire anyway

Evans was injured for the 2010 tour, was Menchov injured for the 2011 Giro/Vuelta?

Yes of course it is possible that Menchov will do a good tour and win the Tour, but is it that likely?
I admit i am not the definitive expert on the matter, so i may very well be wrong in what i am saying as of course Menchov may disprove me. Yet in all likelihood he will not as he is evidently declining imo.
I never said it is absolutely impossible for him to win the Tour, yet it is unlikely.

Also it shoud be considered that the Tour is raced at a much higher level than the other GTs so there is a much lower possibility of such a scenario occuring.

man you guys go on.

Had a thought: I reckon Evans was toying with Wiggo yesterday. Close to the same time in the first spilt. Then loses over a minute at the next check. But then keeps him at almost the same distance for the remainder of the stage.

Do they call this shadow boxing?

Maybe evans wasn't going full out.
But why should he, evans knows very well not to go hard in the dauphine.
Its the preparation after all, he is only working towards le tour.

You can't take it easy in the TT. It's not the road stage where you can actually softpedal. The perfomance yesterday just shows the current level of Evans. Will he improve come Le Tour? By all means. But you shouldn't draw any ridiculous theories about how did Evans got a psychological edge towards Wiggins by willingly conceding time to him between 1st and 2nd time check and then taking it back.

Well he looked to be taking it easy to me. His facial expressions were not the world of pain we usually see him in when he's going all out.

In contrast to Wiggo who was grimacing and his body was squirming.

The TT showed that evans form is where it was last year. Which is excellent for him. Which means that he is peaking for the right time, le tour.
Obviously evans is now nowhere near his peak form.
But there is still a month left to le tour, he can improve his form during this time.
By le tour he should be in his best form.

I haven't followed the racing as closely this year as I'd have liked, but from what I've seen Wiggins has been all business all year; and especially now as the Tour approaches. There can be no question that Wiggins shows the single-minded determination and consistent dedication needed to win. I think, also, that he is very aware of his role as some sort of singular, sporting representative of Britannia, and this too propels him forward.

Wiggins has had his sights set on this year and on this Tour since breaking his collarbone in last year's Tour. No doubt he sees time, and Froome, and other things breathing down his neck, and 2012 as his break it or breakout year.

If Bradley Wiggins is the unstoppable force, Cadel Evans is immovable in his desire to defend his jersey, so dearly achieved. After showing monumental promise, and several abortive approaches over several years, he finally has victory in Le Grande Boucle dialed in definitively. And his team, for all its disappointing problems and results this year, will still provide in the end all the support Evans needs to defend the maillot jaune.

If this year's Tour is even close to last year's, it should be pretty exciting. Some of you know I'm an Evans fan, but if Wiggins can take it he'll be, in all likelihood, a deserving victor. I might say that grudgingly, but I do say it. Even in the absence of Contador, this is going to be a great race.

I wish I knew who the winner will be. Maybe Wiggins, maybe Evans, maybe someone else altogether. One thing's for sure, we are looking at the prospect of an excellent Tour, and an exciting match-up.

Yo Maxi, it wouldn't really be exciting anymore if you knew who'd win it, would it? Maybe best for your entertainment, unless you like betting ofc.

Much as I like Evans I really hope he continues to show his superior form and tactical nous to Wiggins by conceding 1minute 40 something in both TT stages of the Tour.

Fortunately for Evans and the neutral observer he is not a muppet and is a true racer.

Getting caught in a TT is wretched - there is no way you let a major opponent even get you in their sites if there is anything you can do to avoid it.

Well, since he didn't get caught, despite Wiggins best efforts, that is clearly not a concern. What we've seen this year, so far, at least, is a carbon copy of last year. As for the rest, July will tell.
