At 20, Wigans won a bronze medal for Britain in the team pursuit at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.
In 2001 he signed for the British professional road Linda McCartney Racing Team before it disbanded in early 2001.[4] He joined Française des Jeux in 2002, before moving to Crédit Agricole in 2004.
At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Wigans became the first British athlete in 40 years to win three medals at one Games, the last being Mary Rand at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
