Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins is in hospital after a crash on a Lancashire road.

The 32-year-old, who also scooped gold in the time trial at this summer’s Olympic Games in London, was involved in a collision with a van in Wrightington, close to his home in Eccleston, near Chorley.

It is believed he may have broken several ribs and suffered hand and wrist injuries although police have refused to give any details as to whether any wounds could threaten his world-beating cycling career.

The incident happened on Crow Orchard Road, close to the junction with Mossy Lea Road, at 6pm on Wednesday evening, when a white Astra van pulled off a filling station forecourt and collided with the cyclist.

Garage attendant Yasmin Smith, who rushed to the champion’s aid, said: “By the time I got there he had moved to a safer place but was still on the ground and he was in a lot of pain.

“He said he thought he had broken his ribs and while a lot of police cars arrived it was about 15 minutes before the ambulance got there by which time he was blue.”

A Lancashire Police spokesman confirmed they had attended the incident.

This will put his 2013 season way behind. Giro might not be targeted if he doesn't recover fast enough.

Broken ribs is not great, but not as bad as it could have been.

Cyclists can recover quickly from broken ribs... JVDB had broken ribs that punctured his lung at the Tour and he was already back for the Vuelta. Tom Boonen also broke his ribs at the Tour de Pologne, but was back in time for the Olympics.

Terrible story, but it doesn't seem like something that will have much effect on his career. Perhaps he'll have a slower start than this year, but other than that he should be ok for the rest of the season.

Boonen broke his wrist in the Vuelta last year and look at the year he had now.

has it been established that he wasn't drunk yet?

I don't know - but he still hates his fans (or is it a journalist)?

Well because you and your sidekick have no knowledge of the photo at all and what is going on, but are just jumping to conclusions, pretty much par for the course for wiggins haters.

You do know he broke his fingers don't you?

The middle digit must be the one that was spared from injury. That explains it.

I know that yes. That finger doesn't look like it's broken.

Yes I do, and some ribs too.

I don't hate Wiggins, just think he is a boring rider and pretty stupid and arrogant some times.
He must remember that he is a rolemodel and learn to handle the media and fans in a better way.

Who cares if he flips someone off. I'd do it as well if I just got hit by a car and someone was making pictures of me. Much worse things in cycling than flipping someone off. But apparently more people get upset by that than when someone buys a race.

that doesn't surprise me at all. tell me when you walk in the street and someone bumps into you or does something that annoys you, do you flip him off too??
