To be fair, I think you've all got this a bit back to front. The point of team sky is not to promote brits in cycling; it's to promote cycling in britain. And that's not the same thing. Anyone who watches pro football can understand that.

Not really, my comment was a response to OnTheDrops, it was not a critique of the aims of team sky.

To be fair, the point of team SKY is to act as part of an overall brand recognition campaign for British Sky Broadcasting Group plc.

then why do they get italian riders, according to them because they want to promote sky italia

Which is why it's idiotic to try an 'promote a certain nationality'.

why? it just means collecting together some of the top british talent in the same team. that happens in a lot of teams. a lot of aussies in green edge. many spanish in movistar. gives the team a national flavor for the fans and helps some of their neopros break through. As time goes on, it may well be the case that sky merely are a british run team, but there was nothing wrong with using its beginning to give British road cycling a much needed boost. definitely done the job.

Big difference between being a british team and being a team which promotes britishness (whatever that is) especially when only a third of the team hold british passports.

Back to cycling, it seems like Wiggo's Giro challenge is definitely over today.

What will happen at the TdF?

Sure, but then Wiggins has won a lot more than Froome besides the Tour de France too.

And that's an understatement.

By the end of the 2010 season Bradley Wiggins had won 4 World Championship Gold medals and 3 Olympic Gold medals.

Chris Froome's claim to fame was disqualification from the Giro for towing up a climb and this:

Chris Froome’s career so far has not been gone according to the usual scripts. He was already a promising young rider when he learned, in adolescence, that the champions of each cycling country get to wear a special jersey made up in their national colours. Precocious, he telephoned the Kenyan national cycling authorities.

"When are the Kenyan championships?"
"There aren't any."
"How do I get to wear the national champion's jersey?"
The question was greeted with a laugh.
"I tell you what, if you design the jersey, and then sew it together yourself, you can be the national champion."

He did. - Matt Rendell

Froome will be the leader, Wiggins will eat crow and somebody else will win.

If i was Wiggins i would pullout and go home. no point battling on if you're sick. he will aim to be as good as he can for the tour and hope Froome cracks from the pressure so he can assume leadership. the better conditions of july will see a transformation.

Weak.

Hard men in the Belgium bars would be laughing at such a performance.

He has to finish the Giro.

You can't have GT winners pulling out.

Ullrich rode through sickness in the 2004 Tour.

Interestingly it seems that the Wiggo bashers are now worried he's going to drop out of the Giro...if he's such a zero you wonder why they would care, oh wait...

he did not had in mind to rider another tour after that tour
wiggo will ride the tour after the giro, so maybe he's better pull out and go in sunny mallorca or tenerife and train.

Sad to see, would be good if he sticks around to try and help the team (if his health is improving). Otherwise take a few weeks off and look to the Vuelta/Worlds.

That's Wiggos problem. Wants to be safe in Tenerife. Where the numbers are good.

The experience he will gain here at the Giro is paramount for future races. He needs to stay in the race.

Needs to get his head sorted. He's going to get tired out again and again if he keeps slowing down so much for every corner which therefore requires him to use more energy to get back up to speed. I feel that contributed to his loss of time more than him being sick today.
