Wiggins is not a proper cyclist, in my opinion. Big engine, big lungs, big heart, but can't handle descents, rain, or sharp corners?

Yet he is 33 and has never had these problems before (Even ridden Roubaix several times), Something mentally isnt right at the moment.

preparing for the Tour, would not want to spend any extra energy or take any risk. If a team can tow him to win the Giro, he would be happy.

Not only the tour, but all the major stage races below it. Plenty of others tried but could not. They just didn't have the consistency. I doubt we will see another rider have a year like wiggins did last year for a long time.

You were dismissing other people's opinions in the clinic who were defending Wiggins from doping accusations when they said the route was easier and there was no Contador and Schleck. It was made out to be excuses. You also said something similar about Froome when people said he was up against a poor field in CI this year and this was also deemed an excuse.

Now you're happy to say the same thing to dismiss the ability of Wiggins as a rider by using those same excuses that other's used.

I think it's the subject matter bringing out the worst in people. I'm not the sort of person that gloats in peoples failures at all, Lance failing in the 2010 tour didn't even make me laugh. I much prefer to enjoy the positive aspects of a race.

Something in Wigans brings out hidden unsportsmanlike traits in me for I was truly rofl rofl rofl continuously this morning when I read he had lost another few minutes and was likely to pull out.

Meh. Cadel Evans had a pretty similar year in 2011 with GC at TA and Romandie and 2nd at Crit Int leading up to his tour win, and that was with a far weaker team to help him.

If a cyclist is in the form of his career and selects the right races I would think we would see the same sort of season again soon. Sky also cherry picked the stage races with a big TT in it for Wiggins to dominate throughout the year (Im not saying that is anything other than smart race selection, but it helped him achieve his impressive palmares for the year)

Contador's '09-10-11 were all just as good if not better.

And again with no team. In fact in some cases his own team working against him.

Cycling legends are made in the face of adversity. Look at the way Contador rode the 2011 Tour. Crashes, tired from the Giro, time penalties and still rode to win or die.

Evans was sick in last years Tour and rode to the end.

Wiggins dropped out of TA this year. He should have rode it. The rain there would have prepared him for this experience. The rest rode it. Hardened them all up including Froome.

Yes JV only has space for one soft rider and TommyD has had that position filled for years.

Those were great performances, but Wiggins season did trump those. its very rare to win Paris-Nice, the Dauphine, tour de Romandie, the Tour de France and win Olympic gold in one year. yeah he had a good team, but he was able to combine climbing at 6w with dominant individual time trial efforts. it was extremely impressive.

all great riders - contador, evans - have cracked majorly in the past in grand tours. Evans 2010 TdF, Contador Tdf 2011, Paris-nice 2009. And look at hesjedal losing 20 minutes on a mountain stage. wiggins has nothing to be ashamed about.

I'm not suggesting Wiggins has anything to be ashamed of. He's caught a cold. Not much he can do about that.

Just making the point that while Wiggins had an extremely impressive 2012, its not completely out of the ordinary, Cadel had an impressive 2011 (but yes, less impressive than Wiggins '12) and as the hog points out Conti had extremely an impressive 2009 and 2010 where he almost toyed with the peloton in every stage race he entered. So I don't think we'll have to wait too long before we see someone else have a stella GC season.

No i don't think they forget that. The sky mechanics forget to attach wiggins's "tandem bike" to uran's and henao's bike so he can descent fast

Lets not use excuses here, he wasn't strong enough to win it and did crack and lose time. Plus A Schleck did even more than Contador in that Tour as well as the performances of Tommy V who rode like a hero to defend yellow. Not a lame Tour at all.
