The weather:

Right now, the weather forecast is predicting partly cloudy weather, with rain in the evening.

The favorites:

Apart from the Tour of Flanders, the Paris-Roubaix presents a route where power will be more important, than kick up the hills.

Fabian Cancellara, Peter Sagan *****

In my opinion, Peter Sagan presented himself in a class of his own last week, soloing his way to the finish line. The question is though, if he will have enough power to follow Fabian Cancellara, who many people thinks has the bigger engine of the two. IMO it will be very close between the two, and right now I do not see who will challenge the two to the title. For me it is between them.

Sep Vanmarcke, Alexander Kristoff, Zdenek Stybar, ****

Vanmarcke did a great ride in the Tour of Flanders, where he absolutely killed himself. Only Sagan and Cancellara proved to be stronger than him. I have therefore decided to put him in the level just below the best. But he is the strongest contender bellow the two big guys. Etixx-Quickstep have not dominated the classics, as we are used to see it, this year. But the Paris-Roubaix looks to be better suited for the team, with almost too many talented cobblestone riders. Zdenek Stybar will look to improve his 2nd place from last year. Last years winner of Tour of Flanders, Alexander Kristoff is also a big contender for the title. With a good sprint and a big engine, the norwegian is likely the one to win, if a group gets to the velodrome.

Niki Terpstra, Tom Boonen, Luke Rowe ***

The two other main Etixx guys do have some firepower. 4x winner Tom Boonen and 2014 winner Niki Terstra will try possibly be played out earlier than the captains, and that will be the case with a lot of the second-tier guys bellow. Although it is not likely, they do have a shot at fooling the favourites and grabbing the title.

Lars Boom, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Ian Stannard **
Jürgen Roelandts, Tiesj Benoot, Tony Martin *

The lineup:

This is a provisional lineup taken from Steephill. I will update it as soon as the confirmed lineups are released.

Discuss and enjoy the race guys. It looks to be a great one!

Having a hard time seeing anyone other than Cancellara, Saganwinning this - possibly Kristoff as well if it's a defensive race.

In fact, can't really see anyone other than Canc winning. He's not going to let any possible threat go after what happened at RVV, and I doubt anyone can live with him when he really lets fly on the pave.

Good OP, but Thomas definitely isn't riding, I'm fairly convinced Benoot isn't, and I thought Demare wasn't either. Boom should definitely be included on the favourites list, imo, especially since it's muddy and has a 40% chance of rain.

Sagan will smoke him just like in Flandern. Cancellara dont have what it takes to win Roubaix 4 times :D

I think Sagan needs brief periods of recovery between the anaerobic efforts to be at his best; which is why he's always done better at Flanders - where you get a nice 1-2 minutes freewheeling downhill after every climb.

The last 4 hours of Roubaix offer pretty much no recovery. You're either on the pave or racing for position ahead of the next set of pave. I just don't think Sagan can be at his explosive best in that situation. Cancellara can and has done many times in the past.

Especially for Sagan, who is such a good descender he can gain time in these recovery periods. It's also worth noting that, while Sagan is a decent bike handler, he's comparatively inexperienced on the distinctive and difficult pave of Roubaix (especially in the mud).

Quoted for truth

Hmm i think Paris-Roubaix is less predictable than the Tour of Flanders this year. Although i think Vanmarcke, Cancellara and Sagan are a little stronger than the others. But the possible outsiders are many, and Etixx will try everything to not leave the cobbled classics without a significant podium. So i have no idea who will win.

Kristoff has never performed well in Roubaix, not even last year when he was basically unbeatable in every other race. I don't see how he can be considered on the same level as Sagan, who is clearly stronger than he has ever been.

Cancellara ***
Vanmarcke, Sagan ***
Rowe, Stybar, Terpstra **
Stannard, Kristoff, Boom *

Rowe is my joker here. He has steadily improved over the years and will get to race for himself this time. He suffered a bit on the final walls of Flanders but will be at his best on the flat cobblestones of Roubaix.
I'm sorry to not include Tommeke, but nothing we've seen thus far this season suggests he can win such a race.

Any news on Benoot and Demare kindly appreciated.

Lars van der Haar.

The Rest.

I had to look at the start list. :p

Lars van der Haar ‏@larsvanderhaar
Due to injury of @ZicoWaeytens I'll start my first Paris-Roubaix this Sunday. Gonna be a special feeling to do that race. New experience!

57kg on Arenberg! If he reaches the Velodrome, Quintana has no excuse. Kom aan Lars! We love you, guy. :)

I'm hopeful of a classic edition. With no Dengenkolb, Thomas and GVA, with Benoot surely feeling the effects of Sunday, with Kristoff in average form, and with EQS lacking anyone who looks capable of a big win, Sagan, Cancellara and Vanmarcke look comfortably the strongest. But the rest know this, and also know that Sagan and Vanmarcke's teams are weak as p***, and whilst Trek are decent, they don't have the strength to control throughout. So, come the secteurs, we should see the likes of Sky, BMC, EQS, Lotto and Astana sending men up the road. Fingers crossed for a bit of rain too, and we could have mayhem. I'm gonna predict we get an unlikely winner - a strong domestique like an Oss or Trentin.

Alright guys. Who's gonna coordinate the rain dance Sunday morning?

This! And even more - if it does not rain, there should be a sprinkler truck rolling in front of them (preferably with a mud distributing device).

Another vote for Rowe as a really strong contender here. Of the 2nd tiers, Boom is looking good too.

Biggest shame is Benoot getting injured. Even if he makes the start line, we're not going to see what he might be capable of. Here's hoping he comes into this race in good shape next year. Really excited by his potential.
