It's almost as backloaded as the Tour last year. The first week is utterly woeful on paper. Then again, I thought the first week of the 2010 Giro was going to be a letdown unless the weather saved the day, and it was great then, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

Think you might mean 14 and 15, not 13 and 14. 14 is high and slow - 1200m in 20km, then 1500m in 25km. If the more attacking climbers race 15 right, some of the TT guys might suffer a bit there.

I hate that cliché. It's only half true. The riders can only race on the course they've been given to race on, and some courses just aren't conducive to good racing. It's no good blaming the riders for being too conservative in a race like the 2011 Worlds, when there is no platform for attacking and no chance of it being successful or in fact achieving anything other than tiring yourself out.

It's the race organisers' responsibilities to produce a course conducive to racing (which they do with varying success levels recently), and then it's the riders' responsibility to actually provide the racing (which they do with varying success levels recently).

I meant that the Giro has got the platform (route) for a good race, now it's the riders to make it. Agree completely with your post.

Jelle is also horrible in time trials. He's a similar kind of rider, but we'll have to wait if he'll ever reach the level of his older brother.
