If Wiggins avoided the crash and is OK, why did he roll in across the line in 154th place? Just curious...

Most of the riders who were just behind the crash ended up 130 and downwards. Taaramäe was like the first rider not to fall and he got 166th.

Marginal gains :D

That's probably it. He probably saved 0.01% energy output by rolling in basically slower than anyone else caught up by / in the crash.

I will make an observation though, Wiggo finishes 154th and finishes with 1 teammate alongside him (Porte), Menchov comes home in 144th place with 6 teammates alongside him. Its pretty clear who is getting more team support and protection at the moment...

Tabulating data in club races is difficult enough, those French Chappies do an excellent job keeping tabs, considering the pace and pressure they work under.

Maybe, but Sky are down to 8, Cav and Eisel were in the crash, EBH was going for the win and Rogers probably got round the crash? If Wiggins was ok then there was no need for everyone else to wait.

Thanks, no Spring Chicken then, like Sagan.

But coming into his prime on the right platform.

Well, tomorrow we head from Rouen to Saint Quentin, so if Goss steps out of line again it should be straight to jail without a trial.

(Reminds me of Ferrari wrecking the sprints in the Giro.)

This was as decent as a flat sprinting stage can be(besides the stupid crash). Enjoyed the little dig of Chava, Dumoulin and Phil Gil. Gratz to Greipel, sucks for Cav and other sprinters who missed out. This is why you need a good sprinter train.

Agree that you can't put too much into that.

But Wiggins has looked isolated. And he was with very few teammates around him on stage 1 and 3.

Sagan pulled another amazing maneuver to avoid the crash. Oss went down right behind him. He was only a little ahead of EBH after the crash and still managed fifth, almost 4th. Can definitely see him podiuming on Cav's stages, so he will be hard to catch now.

The race arrives with too much freshness for the final. Nothing new perhaps, but it adds to the crash danger. Chavenel, at least, can provide for real attacks. He will eventually succeed. I hope.

i think that's just a different approach. BMC for example have been giving Evans a full train even on flat stages just to make absolutely sure he stays out of trouble. sky do not seem to bother that much, true, but again, the hierarchy in the team isn't in doubt, not for a second. i think this is due to the respective captains and what they ask for. generally, Evans seems like a nervous guy, while wiggins is more reserved
