So since I'm a total n00b about tv coverage explain me this.
Why can we get live pictures of the journalist interviewing colombian and british fans on the climb but no live pictures of the race?

I'm not remotely an expert but I think the basic principle is the moto cameras have to send their images to the helicopters which then relay the images to the tv stations (?) or something like that, but when the weather is bad the helicopters can't get up. The fixed cameras on top of the climb don't need to relay to the helicopters (maybe just to a nearby tower since they are close in range) so they can show images. A very rough answer that's probably not entirely correct but gives you an idea :D

I can't wait for one of those guys to appear out of the mist.

"Tonight Matthew, Mauro Santambrogio is.......Avril Lavigne"

I'm ok with not racing up mountains when it isn't safe, but I can't accept that there can ever be weather that justifies starting the race but not broadcasting any pictures.

So for you it would be ok to let the helicopters fly even if it's dangerous and might even result a helicopter crash?

Yeah, it's a pity there are no live pictures, but I guess the families of the pilots are more than glad to see their family members safe on the ground...

Maybe the crafty Italians will bring like 100 km of cables and 40 cameras and we will have live coverage of the climb from stationary cameras!!!

Grosso modo. The images coming from the motorbikes need to be relayed to aircrafts, since there are no telecom networks on those mountains. From the aircrafts, they're relayed to a satellite and then received by RAI.

What you see at the finish is relayed to a satellite.

Officially: There won't be any TV-images of today's stage. Only those from the finish area. Just like in 2008 https://twitter.com/mrconde/status/335759379561328641 … #giro

is this for real?

Which stage was that?

If i remember correctly we got coverage for all the stages.

That epic stage that kyrienka (i think) won where di luca together with il falco went crazy. That was awesome

Well, then it's a case of you not knowing how they broadcast the pictures into your tv. Do you genuinely think RCS and RAI have no interest in showing us pictures as soon as it's possible?

I don't...

You have live pictures from the finish because they have a TV truck with a satellite dish there, and cameras are connected to the truck via cable.

With motos, its different. Motos relay video feed to helis, and helis relay the feed to a plane which relays the feed to a satellite. Break the chain at any link, and there are is no live video.

What will happen today, is that motos will record the video to some kind of physical media, and once that media gets to the TV truck, and video from all motos get edited together you will have highlights. Probably an hour or so after the race ends.

You will have last 350 meters live though, because its covered by stationary cameras (same ones that are interviewing the fans). I hope i explained it right.
