Makes no sense, if there's a crash in front of you and you have to slow down you shouldn't get gapped, what is the 3km rule for if not?

It's up to the officials to decide if a rider was really held up by a crash, or if that rider took advantage of a crash to ease off and coast safely to the end. We've all seen riders who were in the course of losing time anyway, glide smoothly up behind a crash and put a foot down, in the expectation of getting the winner's time. I've no problem at all with a race jury letting riders who try that eat a time loss.

(I'm not saying that this is what Wiggins did today, just to be clear. Only that being behind a crash, particularly in a small group shouldn't necessarily get you the winner's time.)

Even in a sprint stage, that rule doesn't count without crashes or mechanicals. Maybe Wiggo was caught behind a crash, could be his luck.

It's the race judge deciding. Being on a motorbike he was probably close enough to decide wether he was delayed or not.

Agree there should be consistency in decision like these, but aren’t we always told that the best solution is to ride at the front and therefore avoid any crashes – seems that for whatever reasons he didn’t stick to this ‘rule’ today, and is paying the price for that.

Riding at the front (or near it) is exactly what Sky has been doing, but they tend to ease up at the 3km mark.

He's definitely not weak, he just thought he could get away with sitting at the back, and he didn't

Of course the best tactic would have been to go all out in the sprint and then warm down on the rollers, that's 20" bonus and at least 2 minutes of marginal gains in the legs for week 3

Crash did happen within 3km, because some riders involved in it were given the same time. Race judges decided that Wiggins wasn't held up by the crash so there are a couple possibilities:

1) Wiggins was held up by the crash and the Judges made the wrong decision not to award him same time
2) Wiggins pretended to be held up by the crash and the Judges correctly awarded him his real time

As we can see, many people here have already made their decision on which it is depending on whether they are a Wiggofan or Wiggohater
