Stage 1: S.Lorenzo al Mare – Sanremo 17.6 kms TTT

Start time: 15:10, May 9th

Analysis:
The Giro kicks in with the nowadays traditional TTT. The particularity of this time trial is that the course is almost entirely on a "pista ciclabile" (= a bike track) instead of on a normal road. The track is all on the coast, which means very nice scenery and some wind exposure. The track is not very wide and has a few swift turns and tunnels, so this stage might actually provide a serious challenge for the teams.

Expectations:
Tiny gaps but a couple of teams to mess up and lose big time.

I dont expect tiny gaps, we have seen in Romandia what a TTT of this lenght can do, and for Pozzovivo was not a tiny gap, but for Quintana, and Movistar is a good team for TTT, as well wanst tiny gaps, and if you have a mechanical, or risk more and crash, would be one of the most importants days of the Giro. It could be tiny gaps, but it couldnt, and I am sure it isnt stage that most of teams have more fear, and some riders are there mainly for that.

There was a climb in Romandie and I can't imagine any of the favorite's will bring a team as weak as Movistars team there

After another look at the route, my impression is even better than in the autumn when it's been released.
Really nice design. It gives an opportunity to the riders to ride themselves into the form, but won't forgive unreadiness.
I like the itt coupled with an uphill finish the day after... a killer combo.
The finishing climb could have been faintly harder, though.

Really nice work. Much appreciated.

I tried rotating the stage 8 profile of Forca d'Acero as suggested by netserk (and move the description of the climb's details to the right). Seems to work:

It is a good Giro for Hesjedal, the big stages are at the end, there is a long ITT, He could win again if luck come back to him again.

Lol, well I guess theoretically you're right. Adam Hansen could also win if he's lucky enough. And when has Hesjedal ever ridden a good TT?

The 09 TTT where he was the accidental 5th rider when Pate was dropped and he just sat on the back of Wiggin, Miller, Zabriske and Vandevelde until the final few kms tells us all about his ability to TT. They did not rate him at all and I don't either. It was awfully convenient that he managed a good TT just when he most needed it.

I love the myth that Hesjedal is good TT'er even though he exactly rode 1 good TT in his whole life.

Btw, this thread was golden regarding his TT abilities. :D

lol look at durtyfat's posting history, it's all "Hesjedal, Hesjedal, Hesjedal " :D
What's funny about that? If he's his fan, probably Canadian, it's perfectly understandable.

So what should we expect? Bertie to try to win some uphill sprint seconds before the TT where Lil Richie can eventually gain something? And then to wear the opposition out climb by climb, or launch the Etna style attack?

richie gain something? he will come down to earth quickly... he has 0 chances against contador, period

I think Contador is exactly where he wants to be. He might try a suprise attack in one of the medium mountain stages but I don't think there's any room to put significant time into him for Porte. He's also bringing a strong team so I think he can sit around and wait for the really hard stages to come if that's what he wants

Whether or not the break survive on Stage 3 will depend if OGE have the pink jersey or not. If OGE don't get the pink jersey in the opening TTT, then that's a stage that OGE believe Matthews/Gerrans can win and take pink, so I can see them chasing it down. Whereas the following stage they will ear-mark for Gerrans. If Matthews is in pink then yeah, a break will probably go.
