And anyone see Zubeldia come in just behind Sagan...I think I got a glimpse of him but the camera was out of focus

Zubeldia doesn't actually exist. He's an inside joke by fans and commentators.
We talk him up as a favorite for a top 10 and the TV then lists him in the top 10, but no such rider actually exists.

Never ever liked time bonuses but to have them on some stages but not others has always been stupid.

FWIW disagree, but from the other direction: I'd be happy not to have time bonuses on flat stages because who cares if Kittel is 2 secs ahead of Greipel and 4 ahead of Kristoff, etc

I kind of exactly completely disagree. This has been the most interesting thing to happen in the ToC for years (ever?). At least gc didn't come down to a single 20 minute effort up a single hill.

Aha - well of course in most races those in the top 3 on flat sprints aren't also bothered with the top 3 on MTFs. This race is the exception whereas I was speaking more generally.

So will Cav lead out Allaphillipe tomorrow?
No, it's a flat stage he can win. He wouldn't even contemplate doing this if Julian was one second away from the Tour de France.
lol

If they were actually to do this (and they won't), they'd be better off having Cavendish sprint for the win on his own while Renshaw leads out Alaphilippe. Cavendish could take bonus seconds out of play, while Renshaw is a better lead out man than Cavendish. Leading out isn't about fastest acceleration or highest top speed. It's about holding a very high speed and fast tactical adjustment. Those things are Renshaw's special skills, even though Cavendish is a much better sprinter.

Not that it will happen, of course.

Sagan may very well still win AToC, either today or with bonus seconds tomorrow.

Why are the commentators happy with what's happening! This is all beyond me.

I'm not sure it's all that stunning that two guys who have been finishing at or near the top in most of the big european spring races are riding better than this weak field.

What is the gradient of the final climb?

The actual climb, from Mt. Baldy to Manker Canyon parking lot, few meters bellow the Ski Lifts, is 7km at 9%. Reminds me a bit of last year's stage finishing in Mountain High, where the steepest part was actually the finale up to Table Mountain.

Thanks Bigmac. 7km @ 9%? I'm guessing the Sagan fans were trolling when they said he could fight for GC here...

I'm hoping you're right there. A list of winners that goes TJVG, Wiggins, Sagan looks very odd.

Sagan has displayed more climbing potential in his first two years as a pro (never mind he's still young) than Wiggins ever did before 2009.

Loved Sagan's efforts earlier today, I just loved how he had to be basically peeled off the bike after the finish.

(I need to be peeled off my bike most of the time right now, even after just a 10k.)

The pain, the pain - you just gotta love it!

Fantastic race action in the last part.
Just confirms the fundamentals of the sport works very well.
If we could get rid of some of the control mechanism in the modern version, cycling would be much, much more "successful".

Congrats to Alaphilippe, but a big Chapeau to Henao and Sagan etc also.

Bonus secs are in play on the last stage.

Sounds like game on.

I don't know why there is such a disdain towards Sagan's performance.

I mean, his best shape has always been around ATOC - Tour de Suisse. He won a prologue here in Switzerland, he won a mountain stage here in Switzerland, he won multiple flat stages here in Switzerland. And Tinkov wasn't in charge...

no, there's no disdain. a contraire, many twitter fans praising him.
you would see disdain if Henao, a climber, won yesterday.

i remember Sagan dropping Contador and Froome in the company of Nibali in Tirreno in the stage with the wall climb
