I've been saying for years if CPA is serious about riders' safety they should check the GT routes in advance and express all due concerns when it ìs still possible to make changes.
This way they're only damaging the sport image.
This. Maybe some races have some plausible deniability cause routes aren't out for that long or roads are unavaiable for long stretches, but you're not gonna tell me they only found out the Croix de Coeur descent could potentially be difficult this morning.

The way the rumors go, they were talking about this after the stage yesterday already, so even yesterday they were saying "Let's kick up a fuss at the last possible moment"

??? Maybe they should just hire these F-head teams do come up with the course design during the winter

Either the decent is not rideable or it is. If you trade that against a short stage then you are not really concerned about safety. Probably 80% of the peleton would say: "Less mountains, shorter distance - fine by me".

The UCI has to do more to control routes and races so that stuff that is too dangerous can be taken out before the race kicks off. That could be done together with the rider. On the other hand only extreme conditions that really makes it unsafe compared to good conditions to ride should lead ton cancellation otherwise we will see more riders and teams game the system and changed the route to there likeing. We could even see it with this race. Of course Ineos or Jumbo want to cancel Lussari for whatever reason if they are in pink. And all sprinters would like to take Giau out so that they can get to the sprint stage.

Sorry but either you have serious safety concerns or not. What we hearing from the peleton and RCS is that there was a deal made to alter the race significantly because most of the riders saw an advantage for them. Seem like this had nothing to do with safety or weather protocols.

looking at the conditions over the san bernardo would be hilarious if it wasn't so embarassing. i almost think this is some kind of political move that has more to do with stage 10 than it does this stage.

I don't care much about him, but the tone in your posts. You think you have the moral high ground and have more or less concluded with statements like "The level of contempt most sports fans have for athletes is truly nauseating". I find moralists like you far more naseating than sports fans who thinks this stage should have been ridden according to the original plan.

I get your point about the tone. But the other one about moralism doesn't make a lot of sense to me. The riders are specifically being attacked for breaking moral. So the moralist might well be the one who makes up formal arguments for why they should ride. Especially since it's really easy to make the point they should ride, when you're on the couch. Like a proper moralist in a way.

Personally I am failing to detect a lot of moralism in this thread, just different opinions on what is acceptable and confusion about the fact, that the weather in question that was cited as a reason for shortening the stage, does not seem to be there.

Overall I think it is understandable to be disappointed that the stage does not happen in the intended form. But I also believe it is a bit ricidulous to think that pro cyclists get the idea they need a breack from 5-6 hours of grueling weather conditions out of thin air, or because they are weaklings that don't know how to properly ride a bike.

give it 20 more years and they are just riding on a home trainer that scan their position and calculates the drag etc.
And the organizers can then enter the ride + the wind resistance.
And depending where they ride according to the application they will get drag advantage or not.

and if they bump into each other in the application they get force feedback.

Of course they will need some form of entertainment:
so this application will include the possibility to 'buy' things.
- can buy a push on the mountains, which will give a small nutch to the rider (limited in time and number)
- can buy a throwing beer, which will set of build-in sprinkler systems.
Are you paying for a spectator to throw a beer at you or paying to throw a beer at one of your rivals?
