They should have used Gerrans as a lead-out for Albasini. Not the other way around.

Not even sure who is the fastest of the two.

By the way, LF, why is this Pais Vasco route so much better than the Catalunya-one? You essentially have 1 stage, 4 kilometres, where gaps can be made outside of the 27 km (!) time trial in a 6 day race. With these roads available! Much bigger possibilities than Catalunya.

Correct me if Im wrong, but it seems that the former was bad because Contador's chances were hampered by that design.

Well... it's faster... I supposed you'd need a certain amount of guts in order to ride it.

Basically because gaps created in TT >>>> gaps created in TTT
Also the TT isn't excessively long, ignoring the hill and descent there are 15 flat kilometers, with the normal Arrate climb this would have been way too long but with the harder side it's more balanced.

Still not a perfect parcours as I've said, would have liked another tough stage added, could have combined a hard climb with a rapid descent. A bit like stage 3 or 4 but with a tougher last climb. 3-4km @ 9-10%, I'm sure you can find plenty of climbs like that in the Basque Country.

It definitely didn't look like a regular sprint

Positioning was even more important than in a flat sprint

Ok, then we somewhat agree.

In a vacuum, Pais Vasco is better, but considering what they have available (which is a pretty important point), its pretty horrid and most definitely worse than Catalunya which actually had some very good stages.

Pretty dull race action, but congrats to Albasini with a sort of signature win.

This. Looking forward to Scheldeprijs to add some action before the potentially best stages kick off. Speaking of which, I'm surprised that none of the race thread creators have kicked one off.

Far rather Gerrans or Matthews than Albassini, in fact can't think of a rider I would want to win less than Albassini

This. There are reasons to dislike Albasini which are much graver than if someone is a wheelsucker.

About the Aussie bashing, nobody is hating on someone like Durbridge, Adam Hansen and all the talented young climbers that they have (Lachlan Morton, Power, Haig, Hindley, Chris Hamilton...).

Now, what's Albasini done? Is it still that one comment he made several years ago when he was frustrated with a fellow rider? When was that? 2013-14... something like that?

I think so. Tour 2014, Kevin Reza involved

I don't understand why Matthews is so disliked on this forum

I dislike his style of riding (smug wheelsucker trying to knick wins), but that's apparently the only way he can do it, so fair play I suppose. His nationality has nothing to do with it for me. I very much look forward to what the likes of Morton et als have to offer in the future.

Have my doubts about Lachlan Morton - Surprised he got back into the WT without racing in Europe for one or two years.

I don't like Adam Hansen since he has been riding the last many GT's anonymously and just for the sake of continuing his streak instead of letting other younger riders get the call (who also could contribute more, Im sure). Smells like a big PR move to me. If I saw him on the front day, chasing break, being in the break etc. it would be another matter, but he isn't.

That's why riding 5 GT's consecutively like Valverde and actually being competitive and riding to your maximum each day is so much more impressive.

I wouldn't call Adam Hansen anonymous during GTs. He's doing a lot of work for his captain, and still finds the time/energy for the odd late-stage attack.

Havent seen the guy doing anything other than fetching bottle for ages now. But he will probably continue riding GTs until his body says stop, which is sad, because its a super good narrative for Lotto-Soudal during GTs
