enough about "the heat"
its total ***

If a given rider cant cope with heat they would be dropped in every single race where its hot but that's not how it works.

He just wasnt good today for who knows what reason.

You don't think he can (or hasn't) win a WT race on a hot day?

ya ok.

obviously the sensations weren't good today and thats it.

Wow can’t believe Evenpoel was even behind people like Michael Mathews. Truly a bad day for him, hopefully it’s just a blip. What happened to Dani Martinez? Shouldn’t he be better if he’s the leader of Ineos at the Tour?
There’s no such thing as a leader at Ineos. They’ll probably have 5 guys end up in the top 10 going into the 3rd week.

I wanted to watch a couple of stages near the end of this race. To see how JV will perform. And now the whole team is out of the race due to covid.

P.S. Remco it's yours to take.

Yet another Remco failure. Every time I start to believe he tanks smh.

Martinez just nowhere. I've not looked at his prep but unless this is a planned adjustment period this is pretty awful. Meanwhile Thomas looking spooky good? :O I still think peak Thomas can be an interesting joker in the battle of the Slovenians.

Birdsong looks the strongest but this is classic Birdsong being really good in middling stages of a one weeker when nobody else is at their best.

Vlasov continuing to impress. Not sure where he fits best to best over 3 weeks, but he's going to be there or thereabouts for a long time.

Tomorrow's climbs:

Nufenenpass (detailed profile of final 23k)

Moosalp (this is actually the easier side! One of the great underraced passes, such a shame they bypassed it in the 2014 final stage as it would have linked perfectly with the final climb to Saas-Fee)

It can be traced back to ignoring their Classics team for the last five years which means they are limited in one day races and these type of riders can get into breaks and sneak wins in stage races - They also ride in the 'old school' Italian way of totally supporting one leader which is only effective if you exceptional leaders - They also pivoted the wrong way in chasing GC ( which to be fair has had some success ) at GT's, when they dont have a big enough budget to fully support these aims - They also have trouble keeping good Aussie talent and they've had some bad luck with their selection of Aussie talent - For example, they had the choice of Hamilton and Hindley - The problem was that Hindley was the leader for the 2016 and 2017 L'Avenir but was a bit disappointing because his recovery was not good enough, whereas Hamilton who was riding as a domestic, recovered much better - Then you look at Power and Stannard - Along with Ewan they were the best Aussie under 23's in the last ten years - Power and Stannard never lived up to their potential, while Ewan left because he wanted a whole team built around him.

Groves - he's been over-raced with him already clocking 47 race days, because he is chasing points and filling in gaps , so they have to be careful how he is placed for the remain - In saying that there is a chance Groves may go to the TDF because Yates will probably miss - The thinking is Groves can infiltrate breakaways and if necessary do a sprint final if Groenewegen is not there - It does look like Groenewegen will ride the Vuelta with the start in Holland.
In short: a dogs breakfast. A lot of bad decisions, especially when you consider the talent pool in Aust cycling at the moment.

I agree. Their classics team used to really punch above their weight, as evidenced by their multiple monuments.

Very difficult stage: up&down non stop and hot weather. Vlasov confirmed his Tour podium aspirations and looks the favourite to win this race as well. Thomas strong as well. Evenepoel lost the race today, which was totally unexpected. Hunger knock? Dehydration? Weak day? Big MTFs are ahead (esp. tomorrow's).
How about Nielson Powless? He got out of position and came from the back of the group and almost snagged the win. He was a good crit rider as an amateur but misjudged the sprint wheel on this one! Better luck to him tomorrow.

Vlasov needs to drop Thomas today or tomorrow, to get a cushion before the time trial.

These MTFs are hard and I expect Vlasov to gain some time (not necessarily much). If Thomas is able to keep up with the best there then the team should support him in his Tour podium quest (as a co-leader).

Any betting options for how many riders will finish TDF? Either they will loosen testing or something, or there might be only couple of riders left in Paris :D.

So what, we're going to have some 20 riders not starting today?
edit: I see Procyclingstats lists 12 riders, but they don't have any EF riders among them, so could be more.
