Alberto was pretty clear he won't go without some GC support. Without Cardoso, Mollema, Pantano and Zubeldia there is almost nothing left.
I haven't looked at the Vuelta route in detail yet but if it is a standard UniPublic/UniPuerto route Alberto and Pantano should be able to handle it on their own. Then add a few rouleurs and there's even some room left for Trek's 2nd tier sprinters that Guercilena so desperately wants to see in la Vuelta.

It is far from a standard unipublic route, actually it looks very nice on paper, plenty of possible ambush places starting as early as the third stage.

Could be a genuine mistake, but sounds like maybe some power struggle is going on behind the scenes. If so, hopefully it won't degenerate to the level that it did with Tinkov.

Pantano isn't in the revised Poland line up either.

Right, makes you wonder if they just mixed it up or they published some outdated line-ups.

Regarding San Sebastian, did he also say why he won't start? I believe it could be a different race this year without Movistar and Katusha controlling everything and making it quite predictable.

He didn't say why, but I guess he just wants to rest after the Tour.

It can only degenerate to Contador not signing with Trek for next year

Hopefully this is Alberto bidding adieu to the TdF!

Could also be because Contador wants to race La Vuelta and that he will have maximum rest before the race.

Maybe, but surely they could have sorted that behind closed doors rather than leaking conflicting announcements. I think it would have been nice for Contador to support Mollema and Zubeldia at San Sebastian as well. Mollema worked hard for him at the Tour and will surely be really keen to defend his title at San Sebastian; it would have been a nice selfless move by Contador to work for him there.

Their Poland lineup was also wrong. Clearly their PR person made a mistake and posted the provisional lineups.

Back in 2012, when he was banned, I remember a bookie had a bet available, Contador to win another Tour before 2020. I think we discussed it on this forum. It seemed easy money even though the odds weren't too great. It's crazy to think about it now. I think very few people would have believed you back in 2010/2011 if you'd told them he'd not win another TDF.

Yeah, I guess the sentiment was "Wiggo ain't doin dat on a mountainious route", we didn't really know that Frooe would follow up that Vuelta in 2011, and little did we know Contador would only have one crazy year left, in which he'd manage to crash out.

This. Alberto will retire, come back like LA in 2019 and win the Tour. You heard it here first! :D

Tuttobici claims Contador will ride La Vuelta, and it will be the last race of his career.

Luckily I understand Italian and they say nothing more than rumors in Spain claim Conta is considering the option, which was always a possibility. But I don't understand the hurry. With a good Vuelta you could do a good Giro too, with a bad one there would be the possibility of revenge.
