In what way is that cynicism misguided Mr. McQuaid?
They show up and dominate cycling like the old US Postal team, whose members have either been found guilty of doping or are part of the USADA case, then Sky goes 1-2 in the TdF GC. Nevermind the unbelievable performances by Froome and the ridiculous climbing displays that tell us they had 3 or 4 guys on their team that could climb as good as (or better than) the other GC contendors. I think the only performance that didn't surprise us was Cavendish's stage wins.
And if that wasn't enough, they win Gold in the ITT by crushing the field, and setting track records in the qualifier. They actually looked a bit human in the road race, but that was more because they were only allowed 5 riders, 1 of which wasn't doing any work (Cav). No nation has dominated a sport so convincingly that I can recall. Even the US Postal team wasn't stupid enough to try and win everything. I said this in the Sky thread, but if Froome is able to beat Contador in the Vuelta, I'll eat my handlebar tape. That would just be uncalled for.
I get the impression that McQuaid doesn't understand the sport he's supposed to be managing.
"Because it is when an athlete goes into a little ravine and he's trying to climb out that he considers a doping programme."
That's not true at all. At least in cycling, if the rest of the peleton is doping, you can't keep up if you're not also doping. Is he just pretending to be ignorant, or is he choosing to sound ignorant on purpose? Surely he knows this.
