I have seriously considered becoming one. But beyond will power, I would have to change my habits significantly. Preparing food each meal and the limited choices on the road is clearly a problematic position for me.

This is a significant ideological shift and commitment to change that I am not prepared for if I am being honest...

This summer I really upped my fruit intake, mostly melons. I have not had any meat for a few months now. I felt great, but all the good fruit is gone, out of season .... replaced by apples. I used to love apples, but no so anymore. One can only eat so many bananas. Pineapples are okay. I don't like citrus either. Damm .... I'm starving for some good melon.

I think I'm just living in the wrong place for suitable food year around. Are there any places where melons grow year around?

Hi there!
durianrider respect for your fitness and mileage, chapeo;)

I am not a vegan why should i be 178/68, 37 y, lot of burgers and french fries (BMR very good) but i have a lot of friends who are. I do not know much about vegan style, just basics.

So i am having a two questions.
First; would you post that Contador picture, if you were with him on training (and take photos with him) just before scandal, smiling on picture like with that Caise rider? I mean you were riding and taking photos with him, and now that.

Second; imagine that you are on some island with no food at all just one banana(not tree), and cow, there is no chance to ecaping (you know sharks, current etc) and you know that ship who will rescue you is comming for two months.

My question is would you kill and eat that nice cow in order to stay alive and coming home to your family, or you would die in agony and pain just for principles.

If you would choose death, respect to you.

Thanks and sorry for grammar.

Good questions.

1. Why would I put up a photo of contador riding a cow with a 24 gauge in its rump when Ive riden with Contador? Well cos its funny for one and everyone appreciates a joke. Nobody is winning the TDF with out a good sense of humor. I pose with the pro's to gain ****y street cred so people might listen to me more when I say 'meat will clog your arteries, eat rice/pasta/bananas instead'.

2. Only 2 months till the ship? Well I know if I had water that I could fast for that long (world record is 367 days) and that I would risk death via injury or ecoli/listeria/stiga spore poisoning from eating the bovine. Besides, if there is a cow, there is edible plant foods for me too, so perhaps I would share the grass with the cow and say 'if you let me eat more grass then I will promise you a Contador signed photo of your friend with the 24 gauge in their rump..' ;)

Dude, if I can do it ANYONE can do it. Im so lazy that I dont even cook no more and just peel bananas for dinner. (I just ate 16 large ones-no bananas jokes please) ;)

But hey, I lived for years on rice, beans, gourmet tofu burgers, soy ice cream, veg rich pasta dishes, jam on rye etc etc Its SUPER easy. Its a bit like a non cyclist friends say'n 'well Id like to ride a bike but if I got a flat tyre...'

http://www.tryveg.com has some great tips as does http://www.organicathlete.org with their free ebook.

Dates and bananas are my staple where ever I am in the world. I remember times where fruit was scarce so I would eat fruit for breakfast and lunch and a big rice/pasta feed for dinner. That worked great.

I dont eat much melon, as its too light on the carbs with only 6g per 100g edible portion. Bananas are like 20g and dates are the same as rice/pasta with 70g carbs per edible portion. I blend dates up to make a 3000cal smoothie for dinner often. Thats about as fancy as we get these days with food prep. So yeah, there is thousands of options for vegans when it comes to meal time from super simple to super gourmet.

Harley, what do you consider unhealthy vegan food?

I think you should stop by the lunch shop at my work one time and see some of the food that people buy. Last week I remember one guy buying a bottle of coke, a greasy bacon and egg hamburger and a meat pie, and I thought at that moment, 'how the **** do you do that? That's so unhealthy'.

Thanks for the links.

Watermelons really are are a wonderful fruit. After I eat the best part, I cut off the green outer and juice the rest. One melon gives me and average of a gallon of juice. It's not sweet, nor dense in calories, I drink because it's better than any water I can get out of a tap, or bottle for that matter. It keeps for about a day, but I've never kept it that long because I end up drinking it all so quickly.

One of my cats likes Cantaloupe and Honeydew as much as I do. She goes nuts for it!

Grapes and Pineapples have been good this fall, so the lack of Melon is fading,as the seasons change.

Anyways, I appreciate the tips and your videos on youtube.

You just reminded me of those construction site canteens. Everyone it seems is buying the high caffeine energy drinks, buckets of hot chips, dim sims, dagwood dogs and greasy burgers. It's all they sell. Yeah and despite having physical jobs, they're mostly overweight or even obese.

I took a trip out West recently to Charleville for work. Now that's a sight. The entire town is obese, (just like all remote towns I've decided). I couldn't work out why until I hit the supermarket and saw them all lining up at the checkout with their food trolleys. Lollies, candies, ice cream, chocolate and frozen meals for dinner. I think there were a couple of wilted vegetables on a display somewhere but nobody was buying them.

Everything we do and say mirrors our own level of consciousness. Our choices of food, and how we eat it are but one of those mirrors.

We humans are all selfish. We're all pigs, we're mean, vindictive, back sassing fools who really don't know what to do with ourselves in the bodies we call "me". I laugh at the notion that man is where we are today because of eating meat. Just where are we? Are we in a great place? If we are in such a great place, why are we one button from total self destruction? Why are we so mean to each other, and ourselves? Why are we ready to fly off the handle and flip the bird to anyone who we perceive slights us on the road, at work, in the grocer, or with your own family. Why do so many humans take drugs, prescription or otherwise, just to make it through the day? Why do we watch 6 hours of TV a day? Play computer games that you kill each other in bloody massacre's? Or just play to dull our minds from the thoughts that bombard our minds on a daily basis?

Tell me we are so well off.

We have industrial might ..... wow .... good for us. We're choking ourselves with dirty air .... we're eating chemically induced food and using up limited resources in accelerated time. We pump the animals with god knows what, spray the fields with the same .... all to feed the monster ... and the monster is us.

Is all this from eating meat? Can one become a vegetarian and change the world? I don't have any answers, nor does anyone else.

In your heart of hearts , does killing animals feel good? If we had to kill for our own meat, would we still eat so much of it? Some will say no .... and some will say yes. The yes's are those that probably love war, love to kill with their word as well as their weapons. Sadly .... we all love war on some level .... physical or emotional or even spiritual. We're human. It gets passed down from our parents, from their parents, from their and theirs to the beginning of time..... so there is no blame.

Do we think about where our food comes from? That nice turkey roast ..... some poor turkey living their days like any other animal..... maybe born into a factory even .... just eating ...crapping .... all day long . That's it. Then comes the butcher and processing packaging on to your local market. We eat that. No wonder we're half brain dead.

The point of this ..... I'm not sure. Maybe .... it's Life's a ***** and I'm trying to wake up. We all have the possibility to wake up. Eating or not eating meat is but part of that. It's not an end-all, it's just one part.

I don't work in the construction industry, rather a boat builder myself. My supervisor once suggested that I buy some more greasy food to eat at my break, instead of this 'healthy food that I buy', and coming from a guy who is more then 110kg, plays the odd game of rugby, smokes, and claims he could beat me on the bike in a 200m sprint, to a guy (me) who is practically racing at an A grade level, if I couldn't beat him, I would honestly hand back my racing licence to Cycling Australia.

I'm a jobshare vegetarian, actually. Kind of a Mr 90%.

When I met my other half, she was a vegetarian, had been since early childhood. So to be with her and to be like her, I quit eating meat, fish and buying anything with derivatives. Cochineal and gelatine, silk and all that. I learned the basics of animal treatment standards without looking at the pictures, because those make me cry.

And I loved it. I put on a fair bit of weight too, as it happens.

One day maybe three years ago, I split off from my other half in the supermarket - it can be more efficient to do the shopping that way - and I was looking for her again after doing my bits on the list. I found her eyeing up the bacon in the meat aisle.

She told me she had some weird attraction to it. From then on, slowly but surely, the meat and fish creeped back in. For both of us.

Even now, I often miss being fully vegetarian. The strange new stuff you learn about and try, and how vegetarian food tastes better because it requires more thought.

In fact, I haven't really left it behind completely. I still try new and strange stuff and I hardly ever eat meat at all.

I have not eaten any dead animals for 33 years, vegan for last 9 years and raw food for last two. I am 55 years old now. I most certainly think my health and athletic performance is better for it. The last couple years going raw even made a more dramatic difference. Recovery is faster, was very good before anyway, which obviously helps in training.
My diet now consists of fruit. Nearly all fruit, a little greens. No overt fats, nuts etc and no supplemental protein. It is not needed. I eat 2800-4000 calories per day, depending on exertion level. It was a somewhat difficult transition and took time to fully implement. But, It works. I am 6'1 and 164. When I am in shape, I own a bike shop so I don't get to ride as much as I would like, I am an expert mtb racer and 3 road.

Vegetarian?

Short answer: No.

Long answer:

I've been known to take a gun into the woods/field, kill something, gut it, prepare it for cooking, cook and eat it.

Oh the horror.

I enjoy eating animal muscle tissue and have no plans to stop but I respect personal choice. I have no respect for people that don't respect mine.

What about about people who don't respect your lack of respect for the animal?

Where do cannibals sit with you? Still respect their personal choice?

Not sure about a lack of respect. It all comes down to conciousness. For example a pig is only concerned about food and shelter, if these requirements are met then that's about all the animal wants and life is good :)he has not developed 'conciousness'.Unlike you and I we are 'concious'.For instance,we have plans for our life and plans for tomorrow (the pig does not). So if I sneak up behind a well fed and housed happy pig and bang him on the head, then as far as the pig is concerned life was great, he never knew his fate. So IMO there would be no moral issue and no issue of respect for the animal.

Who said I don't respect animals? I didn't get the memo that if you kill/eat and animal you don't respect it. I do weep for broccoli though

Cannibals taste just like chicken I bet.

What's in the animals I eat? Frequently a bullet or lead/iron pellets.

Is this going to turn into a "it's mean to eat meat" thread now? If so I'll need to get a burger to eat while I read the hand wringing.

Me? not avoiding meat. The more meat I eat the healthier and lighter I get. Plants make me fart and bloat me. Hey, why can't I buy a can of "Tuna-safe Dolphin" anywhere?

The diet choice argument always degenerates into an entertaining morality issue over whether or not it's OK to kill and eat animals. Bears have no such discussions. Me, as a mammal, and an inhabitant of my natural habitat, I eat other living things, be they animals or plants. Choosing which living things you devour based on some moral construct is much like relying on religion to make your decisions. I prefer Darwin's natural order of things where the strong survive (by eating the weak I presume) and I prefer not to mess with it or I might cause Global Warming or a Tsunami.

Now, the real clue to vegetarian performance would come from vegetarian female elite level racers. Are there any?

If I were a cannibal, I believe that vegans would taste best if prepared properly.
