Does anybody know what he have done between the Tour and now? He could genuinely surprise people and get close to his Giro 2013-level if he has done things properly. I really hope the kid realises this is his opportunity and he won't get a better one.

In the cycling news interview it's mentioned he was training at altitude in the lead up to the Vuelta.
Yeah I just read that, I guess that answers my question. He comes across as very optimistic in the interview, this really is the time to shine for Carlos..
It seems Carlos has finally decided that he wants to be a professional bike rider after all. Hopefully this is the start of him getting back on track.
I think he should stay on the road tbh, track is too flat for him
Getting his CAREER back on track :D

You know you can't take the Betancur hyping seriously. In fact, you really can't take much of the hyping around here seriously as it's in (hopeful) fun half the time.

Edit: Betancur in the 8" group. Top 5 coming!

I know it's basically joking when it comes to Betancur, but I really think he will be Movistar's best rider GC wise and hopefully end up in top 10

His positioning before the last climb yesterday was horrible. He was within the last five riders to start the climb, and immediately after the start Sky put the hammer down so his race was basically finished at that point. Such a stupid mistake. He did a decent climb, with better positioning he could've finished with Moreno, Meintjes and Zakarin, but certainly not with the best.

A stage victory is within his reach, and a top 15 in GC should be possible, maybe even a top 10.

Anton started 2 or 3 places before him and managed to arrive with Zaka and Meintjes.

He needs to show himself in order to deserve a new resigining, he is still without a contract for 2018.

Only lost 21s to the leaders today. He's Movistar best placed rider after Moreno's crash yesterday. Still, he'll have a hard time to get at the top 10.
Yes, he's decent, but at the moment not good enough to compete with the best. It will be interesting to see if he can improve as the race goes on - like he did in the Giro 2013 where he was only 27th after the first week, but ended 5th in the final GC. The difference is that he did the Tour de France now, I don't know what the impact will be of riding two consecutive GT's. It could be an advantage for him, or he could be completely empty after two weeks. We'll see, I hope for the best.

He certainly has the required WorldTour level again. I don't know what his salary demands are, but he shouldn't be too worried I guess. I expect that he will extend with Movistar, and even if Movistar does not want him for 2018, there will always be a team that will take the risk with Betancur. He's worth the gamble.

If he keeps riding like this there is no doubt in my mind that he will get a WT contract for next year. At worst he will be a great domestique with an upside of stage wins.
Nah, thats not at worst. At worst he will disappear into a black hole and never produce results. At best he will start contesting or winning week long stage races, contesting classics and do great work domestique in GTs (or top-10). I'd take him any day if I was guaranteed a great domestique, but thats not really the case with this man.
