Teams & Riders Cian Uijtdebroeks - From the wetlands to the top of cycling

An article with a nice overview in Slovenia media. Reading it i would say a million is more then fair in this case. Considering things like 3 millions were involved. For JV to let Rogla go. Considering Cian is likely facing 100k and Visma 500k fine. For conducting talks before contract with Bora was terminated. All this would have to be resolved in December or the transfer is not possible till August 2024. So if cycling governing bodies will let it happen then likely this dispute moves to Austrian courts. Where considering things like lawyer fees the final amount will likely go well beyond a million. Couple of years down the road.

Well. JV wanted millions before Rogla got a green light to move to Bora. So now saying things like it's all about the money? And considering Cian just got a new manager (Carrera). Who might be the most responsible for this saga? That is hence rather naive take on it. On how it now suddenly shouldn't be all about the money. That is for Bora. But the rest can grab as much as they can?

In regards to JV and SOQ merger UCI said existing contracts must be respected. So i expect the same stance in regards to this case. Unless i guess corruption gets involved. Then the case likely moves to Austrian courts. And a couple of years and millions from now we will get the outcome of this story.

All of this could be avoided if Visma would follow the same procedure it required for Roglič. Or if Bora was not interested, to wait a year.

So lets see if they are smart enough to resolve this in December. Otherwise it will likely only get worse.

Roglic had a buyout clause in his contract. Also, he's one of the best riders in the world, and he still was under contract for three more years. It makes perfect sense to ask a few million for that. The fact that Bora now want one million from Jumbo is just pure spite. One year's salary, or maybe a little more, okay. But one million for a 20 year old talent with one more year of contract, whom you apparently didn't rate so much that you'd pay him more than hundred thousand euros salary? I don't think any judge will go along with that.

He is on his neopro contract? You think they should've given more to a junior (at the time)? Uijtdebroecks didn't want to extend early, otherwise he would've already been earning more.

Neopro's who do good immediately will always be worth more than they actually earn, definitely guys who go from junior to pro immediately. They're not going to be earning a million immediately.

Looks like Visma-LAB went for the tried and tested “ask for forgiveness, not for permission” approach to this - forcing Bora’s hand by signing one of their riders and letting the courts sort the money out.

I hope the UCI cracks down on this because it just sets the precedent that any rich team can just sign up another team’s rider without having to do any kind of negotiating - leaving smaller teams who work to identify and develop talent with no leverage.

When you say out of spite. Likely indeed some ego is involved in all this. From Cian, to Visma and to Bora. New manager likely being the most innocent in this regard. He just wants the money. What i am trying to say is Bora took Rogla and now Visma wants to take Cian. Obviously this couldn't be due to egos. It's just the mere King himself that Bora took. And Visma all along wanted to abduct the prince aggressively. This two occurrences for sure aren't related in any way. Maybe Visma even hired BR to abduct the prince?

Anyway. I don't know if it works exactly like you say. That is for a rider to be allowed to break the contract, as long as the new team pays his salary. I somehow doubt that.

The way things are going now, Visma claiming Cian is now theirs, and hence for them the whole situation is resolved? Bora might say OK to that. Still more realistically we might have to wait a couple of years for the final answer. Beats me on what the outcome will be. If the whole thing goes to the court. One indicator will likely be the outcome of van Aert trial. That one will likely finish sooner. In my opinion Austrian courts should take the contents of such contract seriously. Hopefully faster. What one could do is to take a look at some similar cases and on how Austrian courts ruled. That is likely on what is to be expected at the end.

I sincerely doubt Jonas can now just say i am with them now. Or Remco, Pogi, Rogla ... I am with them now. And that is that. If Bora and Visma will not reach an agreement, by the end of the December. Then lets see what UCI does. If Cian will be allowed to race for Visma in the 2024 season.

Duh. The lower his salary at Bora, the greater value his contract is to the team.

Yep, this is the material point.

I've seen a few dubious jurists & so-called legal 'experts' popping up in the media to discuss the Uijtdebroeks case & they're all talking about contracts & labour in terms of everyday life - not pro cycling.

And that's a mistake, i.e. this is about a team bringing a young rider through on a pro contract & losing him before his contract is up without any sort of settlement or agreement beforehand. It's predatory behavior from Jumbo within context of pro-cycling. This isn't a about a guy who quit one office job for another, no, this is professional sport.

IMO Jumbo doesn't have a leg to stand on here. If they can't settle with Bora, then the contract they have with Uijtdebroeks is null & void.

If this stands, there isn't a single team safe anymore from riders merely tearing up their contract & signing for a rival. Especially if the 'penalty' is a puny lump sum containing the remainder of the contract due.

All in all i guess two potential things are happening now.

Cian at Visma will likely need to step into Rogličes shoes ASAP. Otherwise result vice the team will be half or less. Considering they are arguably the best team in the peloton, Cian could i guess start winning GTs in a couple of years. If he stays at Bora in the 2024 season. Then he will likely be forced to win Giro for Bora. So in any case it will be interesting to observe his development.

Bora is becoming a first tier team and Visma knows that. Although they had a slightly different stance, while Rogla still at JV. Now that BS doesn't fly any more. They know what they are up against and if possible would like to weaken Bora. Somehow. Good luck with that. You likely just strengthen them in their main goal.

We'll see if the one million eventually will be paid :) My guess is: no.

Their main goal, winning the Tour? Like they weren't going to try that with Uijtdebroeks still on the team?
