Top 10 would be good enough for evans
top 5 would be great for him.

I definately think you could manage expectations lower if you tried harder.

The reality is you can't get any read from this result, because 5th would not be great, it would be below his ability and you would be making an optimistic guess about how much he has in the tank yet to come.

5th would be great for him because he is still in preparation mode and he is building up his form and is not that strong yet. And the TT comes early in the race so he would not perform as well as he does in TT late in GTs.
Last year in the grenoble TT he finished 6th 1.20 behind tony.
And see what he did one month later at the exact same place.

He's been average or better in lots of prep races and not won GT's straight afterwards.

Anything other than a very strong performance (in absolute, unadjusted terms) means nothing. Anything less can be attributed to weakness or preparation as per your individual preference, but it is a guess.

If thats how you interpret his performance tomorrow its fine.
But I won't be very worried if evans does a mediocre TT for his standards.
No doubt he will be pulling faces and suffering on the long climbs coming soon.

Tt in a stage race is not comparable to a tt after 3 weeks of gt racing. For sure Evans has the advantage there IMO. On a fresh basis, I can't see him competing with wiggins. so I'd agree that anything in top 10 is fine.

This happens to a lot of TT-ers who try climbing actually. Wiggins is just one of the rare exceptions.

Actually, I don't think that's true. Most guys that lose weight don't drop their level in time trials. Wiggins got way better while he lost weight. Recently Froome and Westra also lost weight, improved their climbind and they improved against the clock. If you can prove me wrong by listing a handful of riders that lost weight and got worse in TT's, than I'm happy to admit I'm wrong.

Martin lost a lot of weight, didn't improve his climbing but in the meantime his time trialling actually improved.

Rogers never had good stamina and was and is still limited to one week stage races anyway. Actually his time trial is on about the same level as it always was (2008 and 2009 were hampered by illness). Even in 2003/4/5 his results in TT's weren't that outstanding only to have an enormous peak at the Worlds.

I concur, I think that guys who claimed in the past to have "improved in the mountains and lost it in ITTs" like Fignon and Moreau are guys on the decline.

Is it too early to think about Froome v Millar for the second GB Olympic TT spot?

edit: corrected horrible grammatical error

Why to early ? This should be their last test here.

Dowsett is an optional, but I think with his injuries he sustained and not yet at his optimal he will target World ITT.

Dauphine TT will show us who will go to London as 2nd, defo.

No not really as neither are in that great shape, Froome is recovering from the parasite thing again and Millar is recovering from his injury and is only in his 2nd race after his comeback so I would say the tour would be a better indication yet that also involved recovery so I would say it is a combination of previous results etc. Yet i cant see Millar not getting the place, even when Froome was at his best at the WC Millar was selected to ride the TT and he is a guaranteed top TT whilst Froome has only really time trialled at that level once.

I think it's more about who is the better domestique for Cav

I am sure Millar will get in regardless of whether he is doing the TT or not as a the road captain, especially as Thomas isnt riding.
If Froome has had a succesful Tour, then i certainly see him being picked as well for the road race ahead of Cummings and Dowsett. In truth I dont think they will care that much about who is the best domestique for Cav over TT as they are all pretty strong anyway, and such an irrelevant thing in the long term when it is considered alongside a potential medal.

no he won't. He was 3rd in ToC ITT in a much weaker field. Where Voigt was 2nd and Gesink 4th. So I can't see him top 3 in this field.
