I feel like this thread needs to be moved to another forum to be able to discuss freely the results o_O
If we are surprised by these results we should be surprised by many other results by many other riders. So no need to do that!

There are many surprising results here, but if you look at all of it, the picture changes a bit in my opinion.

We have Lutsenko, Izagirre, Vingegaard, Pöstlberger among the top10, while guys like Thomas and Bjerg underperformed.
I think for some results here the bikes or maybe a good recon, good preparation/ DS might be responsible. Obviously the route was indeed hard to judge, difficult to get a steady rhythm on and the end was very punchy.
So some just managed the route better than others. I don't think the results are a very good indicator of form or strength, just a hint.

This Astana result gets more bizarre the more you think about it!

Why did Alexey never time trial well previously? In road stages he showed capacity to red line it for long stretches.

I guess a lot has to do with the route that features multiple short climbs, that probably helps a big engine who is rather puchy a lot against the TT specialists.
Also, since when are Wilier TT-bikes actually good?

But that's the thing. No, he hasn't. Not in TTs. At least not in the last seven years.
Independent of any clinic references, He had a good day. He is just inconsistent. He is a hit and miss case. But he had the tools and the potential. So I am not really surprised TBH. He might lose time heavily in 3 days. That's him.

Ion Izagirre doing a good time trial should be ZERO surprise to everyone. Especially these type of TT.

He phoned his good friend, all time great time trialist Alexander Foliforov before the stage for some advice on cornering and gear ratio.

Doesn't seem like there are that many implying he's a fraud. It's mostly just surprise... and in toby's case it seems like surprise at how few ITTs he's won.
