Cancer Jesus was a nickname given to Lance by his friends (no joke). It started years ago,

Cancer Shield.....I will give that one to the guys at NYVelocity but David Walsh may have been the first to use it

Wonderboy was a nickname given to him on the National team by other riders who were sick of his self promotion

Thanks!

Found 'Cancer Shield' utilized on DPF by belabici from 2007.

No results, though, for 'Cancer Jesus'. Of course, there may well have been but were deleted...

Dave.

Dan Schmalz from http://www.nyvelocity.com for certain coined the term "Cancer Shield".

I agree MUCH better. Wheelmen was a bit of a Zzzzzz. I read most of this with my mouth gaping open.

Considering Murcur's writing style and analysis perhaps should could write the next version of "Inside Sky"?

Appears she does her homework well.

Just got through the first 100 or so pages of the book.

The enablers are just as guilty for the sordid mess Armstrong's life has turned into as he is.

I've always wondered why cycling, at least on the amateur/recreational side where I live, attracts so many socially *** misfits.

Now I see they're on the professional side, as well.

Ironic that Chris Carmichael probably won't see any fallout from any of this, seeing as many of his yuppie middle-aged customers probably consider his involvement in the doping culture as a plus for them.

Who else to get great advice on doping regimens than from Mr. "Extract of Cortisone" himself?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the part where Armstrong refused to help his mother out financially when he began getting paid lovely, even when she was a real estate agent when he was considering purchasing some property in Austin. He wouldn't do business with her so she could at least get the commission.

Man that's troubling. I do wonder what goes through his mind these days as his head hits the pillow.

Then again I did see her wearing that all yellow 1980's powersuit, so I'd probably wouldn't buy a house off her either!

I do fear for him. It can't be good being him. Not even an Ashram can save him.

As he did with so many other folks, Lance had a falling out with his mother. But, according to the book, mom is almost as full of baloney as her son is. The whole mess would make for a good reality TV show... hmmm.

Although I really liked Wheelmen, Cycle of Lies is definitely more juicy lol. Juliet Macur steamrolls Armstrong.

Don't fear for him. I read some of the last portions of the book, and Armstrong remains as arrogant and unapologetic as ever.

He was given an opportunity to settle the Federal lawsuit for 18.5 million with the condition that he testify against others like Johan Bruyneel. He refused.

This impending lawsuit is where he's going to lose most of his money, and he doesn't seem to care.

One thing I believe the author got incorrect was that Armstrong was relocating to less fashionable digs.

The photos of his new house speak to the opposite.

Not sure where in the World you are but in the UK the above is pretty much correct, at least in my experience.

That's the case with all sports that are an individual effort.
The bike gives those kids an escape where they can train by themselves and to an extent race by themselves.

Yeah I suppose your right. Triathlon is like that too, even more so than cycling in some ways.

I loved the story about Lance pipping the ten year-old kid at the finish line in the ride-with-Lance kids race.

On another note, Macur recites the stroy of Bruyneel pouring Floyd's blood bag down the toilet as punishment during the Tour, a story taken from the e-mail exchange between Vaughters and Andreu. I could have sworn Floyd (post confession) said that never happened. Maybe in the interview with Kimmage?

I finished the book this morning and the whole thing is just sad. The man is obviously ill. And I feel badly for Betsy. After all the years of emotional struggle to reach out to him, in the end he says that he hates her. Hates the Lemonds. Hates everyone. The whole thing is just so dark and depressing.

Yup, nothing has changed.

I remember a few weeks ago I posted about how lance was back to his old tricks, smearing folks, vendettas, pushing a new myth. People didn't believe it......Nothing has changed.

He definitely told Kimmage in 2010 that that story wasn't accurate and that maybe JV got two stories mixed up...

In a big book full of sick, head-shaking anecdotes of utter fooked-uppery, this one really had me staring into space.

did not happen like that.

I asked Floyd myself. At 2010 Doping conference in Geelong.

the famous IM or SKype chat between JV and Frankie, I think JV was taking liberties too. I dont think he can be trusted more than Armstrong IMnotsohumbleO

A miserable combination of nature and nurture.

Betsy won the battle to save her name, and with spades. There is an outside chance she may have helped save her sport, depending on where the Commission and UCI goes now.

I think saving Lance's soul presupposes there is one. If I were her, I wouldn't waste any more time on finding out.

Lance is Lance, we know that much now. The problem in the near future will be the effect on his children. He seems to be a fairly permissive parent, like his mom. As they reach young adulthood, I fear they will have some problems.

Pretty simple.
It was Lim that Landis told the story too and Lim told JV.
Someone got the exact story mixed up - which is pretty normal.
But I was surprised that Macur didn't mention that Floyd said it did not happen that way.
The book is very good though.

I can't address the kids, hope they are well.

By his own admission many of his friends have turned their back on him. He does make a good point that they are hypocrites. They had fun riding in the jet, going to the parties, living the life.....but as soon as reality set in they left.

Using Hincapie to smear Frankie and Betsy backfired. George figured out he blew it, called Frankie to apologize. Good move by George. But most of the others just tuned him out as his rants become increasingly irrational.

Maybe I am a fool but I still hope he can get his life figured out.

I think it would be fair to temper that Armstrong is going through what every cyclist has gone through when they test positive. The isolation, the irrelavancy and trying rationalise what the f--- happened.

He's only a year in but now he might understand what he has done to others is being done to him.

I fairly sure he's at stage anger at the moment. My suggestion to him would be to put on a backpack, leave the cell phone at home and trek around South America for 6 months.

Just has to get away or he'll top himself.

Watching the UCI, trek, Nike etc. must drive him batsh1t.

I do get a laugh out if him trying to be sorrowful and remorseful. Those traits just weren't programmed into him. He can't do it.

RR, where are his Hollywood entourage.

Did he get an invite to any Oscars afterparty since his bestFF Matthew shirtless McConaughey won yellow, sorry, the academy award, or is it spelled mConnaughey.
