Pretty much every amateur racer uses electrolyte tablets at one time or another. Endurolytes, Sportlegs etc etc.

Sure, the optics are bad, but it is a totally normal part of bike racing at any level.

Yes but salt tablets as any endurance athlete will tell you are no good 5km away from the end of a race they work over the period of 10-15 minutes and take time to kick in. If he was taking them 30km out to ensure he didn't cramp in the final few km's I could believe it.

It was odd that he would take it and then pull for a few km's then pull off - not sure of anything that would work quite that fast other than some sort of concoction involving an immediate stimulant type drug.

The way he was pulling like a madman the last K's it was more likely cafeine, once considered to be doping, just ask Gianni Bugno. I doubt cafeine will kick in that fast though.

here we go, Zakarin moment today (may even win GC tomorrow), outclimbs Vroooooom+Nairo+Nibs - teenage doper (2007 jun. TT champ, 2009 two year ban for anabolics), progressing from winning ToA (Azerbaijan) last year to 9th/10th in Basque/SanLuis

Caffeine seems to take about half an hour (from what I've read and personal experience).

Painkillers might act faster?

Way less (not exactly scientific term!) than a half hour. 10-15 minutes max for onset of effect if delivered minimally dilute with some mouth lining absorption.

Murito is old. Zakarin is Katusha's Froome experiment. They are fine tuning him to be a multiple GT winner.

Zakarin is a young doper, like many other "talented" young people. The ones who showed talent from early ages.

The difference is that, for somewhat reasons, russians have a tendency to get caught.

Zakarin will not catch 2016 as an active rider, he will be caught and banned for life. Unless Katusha has really paid for the "Free Doping Ticket 2015".

In this case they will catch him in 2016 and get a life ban.
