they're lining up some pretty severe penalties for drug use....

The union sent a memo to players and their representatives this week, outlining a tentative agreement for the league to test 40 players each week of the season, with positive tests drawing four-week suspensions...A player who tested positive a second time would be suspended eight games

Paula is really hiding her doping here by declaring her association with Muller-Wohlfahrt. Bayern Munich and Germany also do a poor job of hiding their doping having him on the bench. Oh yeah, David Moyes publicly said he was doping Jack Rodwell when he said in a press conference he was sending Rodwell to him to get treated for his persistent injury problems.

Dr Hans is an interesting character... (for one, going by that photo, he is the world's youngest looking 70 year old)

some of his patients:

Usain Bolt, Paula Radcliffe, Michael Jordan, Boris Becker, Andy Murray, Cristiano Ronaldo, the Brazilian Ronaldo, Jürgen Klinsmann, Jose-Maria Olazabal, Maurice Greene, Michael Ballack, Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand, Linford Christie, Kelly Holmes, Diego Maradona, Katarina Witt, Bayern Munich...

Jamie Redknapp:

"When I tore a hamstring playing for England, I was out for five months. He is getting sportsmen back on track within five weeks."

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/olympics/article-2170563/Jamie-Redknapp-Usain-Bolt-good-hands-Doctor-Hans-Wilhelm-Muller-Wohlfahrt.html

So he has managed to fix the human body faster than previously thought possible

How does he do this? Well he describes his methods as 'homeopathic'...

Redknapp:

"I've read in these pages about Muller-Wolhfahrt's methods being described by a senior figure within the US Anti-Doping Agency as 'Frankensteintype experiments'.

I'm not sure what that means, although with me he would use fluid taken from the comb on the head of a hen to lubricate a knee joint that had been eroded by a succession of injuries.

He would tell me that it was like 'high quality oil for the engine of a car'.

He concluded that the fluid taken from a hen's comb would lubricate the knee and allow greater movement. I was happy to do what he suggested to have the confidence to play again...

He believes in the power of positive thinking, he is a charismatic man who convinces you he can find the answers."

His answers tend to involve lots and lots of injections (over 1 million in his career he claims) of 'unknown substances'

By the way:

"None of Muller-Wohlfahrt's work in Munich has been peer-reviewed."

http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/7324261/germany-dr-hans-wilhelm-muller-wohlfahrta-great-healer-quack-hyperactive-syringe

He is linked with the Steadman clinic in the US in terms of patient referrals:

"Speaking of the three physicians[Dr Hans, Richard Steadman, and Anthony Galea] Dr. Marc Philippon, managing partner of the Steadman Clinic and a leading hip surgeon, said: "I would classify them as medical innovators. Validating treatments is critical for any innovator in the field of medicine. Look at Albert Einstein. When he created his theory of relativity, people thought he was nuts. If Einstein didn't prove his theory, he would be known as a quack.

"You need innovators, but they need to be surrounded with the right infrastructure."

While Philippon has in the past referred patients to Rydze, who like himself was at one point affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, he also has a connection to Galea.

On Oct. 2, 2009, less than two weeks before the Toronto doctor was arrested, Philippon wrote to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security supporting Galea's 0-1 visa petition -- based on extraordinary ability in the sciences -- that would have allowed him to work in the United States. Philippon wrote that Galea's "inspired approach drives his established excellence in the field and is the reason that he is consistently recognized as one of the top 1 to 2 percent of individuals working in the field of PRP (platelet-rich plasma therapy) and tendon regeneration. The importance of Dr. Galea's contribution to the enhancement of this exciting new field and its application to athletes' recovery with minimal risk and a quicker return to their sport cannot be overstated."

http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/7324265/german-dr-hans-wilhelm-muller-wohlfahrt-american-doctors-refer-high-profile-patients-other

Who is this Anthony Galea?

"Anthony Galea, a go-to doctor for injured elite athletes -- from golfing great Tiger Woods to baseball star Alex Rodriguez -- was sentenced Friday afternoon in a U.S. District Court to one year of supervised release but no jail time.

Judge Richard Arcara imposed the sentence on the Toronto-based sports medicine specialist who had earlier pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of bringing into the United States unapproved drugs, including human growth hormone and Actovegin."

http://espn.go.com/espn/story/_/id/7360176/anthony-galea-canadian-doctor-gets-no-jail-time-1-year-supervised-release

So Dr Hans has discovered the secret to eternal youth at the same time as finding 'magical' homeopathic cures involving countless mystery injections that heal the body faster than previously thought possible. His methods, that could be one of the greatest medical discoveries of all time, have never been peer reviewed. And someone who he shares patients with and considers him a great innovator supported a doctor who was convicted of illegal importation of drugs including HGH.

Oh, and he's litigious...

"We did some research on Müller-Wohlfahrt over the last couple of months. We didn’t translate the whole thing into English because of several legal threats from Müller-Wohlfahrts lawyer. We didn’t want to risk a lawsuit because of a small wording failure."

I see Richard Sreadman's name mentioned above. He's well-known in football circles as well. Hargreaves, Badstuber(who's currently injured), Van Nistelrooy and Michael Owen are players that were treated by him.

You probably thought Wenger was joking too when he said players Arsenal have scouted have very bad blood scores!

That's been well discussed by myself and others in the Doping in Football thread. I never dismissed his comments on this. Do keep up.;) It wasn't players scouted, it was players signed from abroad.

Actually all players signed up are scouted. Players don't just rock up on the doorstep and get a jersey. Well maybe in Ireland they do, but not anywhere competitive.

Be fair now, I can reverse park just fine, I'm just concerned about failing it in my driving test because I don't follow the exact technique. :(

I can teach you in 5 minutes how to do it perfectly.

Relax dude. They don't even test it as a mandatory element in NSW anymore. That is how easy the test is. They make you do a 3 point turn OR a reverse park. You get AS MANY attempts reverse parking as you need and you can go back 16 metres...a long way.

Technique: Leave about 50-80cm between you and the car...extend to a metre if you aren't confident...as you pull alongside the vehicle. Put your indicator on. Check behind you on BOTH sides. Check the mirrors too. Check the blind spots. In places like Bathurst, despite the law saying people should stop...they don't and some will drive around you (note this is mostly in towns with VERY WIDE streets. Sydney doesn't have these, so you should be fine...just take a mental note).

Wheels should be aligned straight at this point. Reverse back slowly and when the front door/dash is in line with the stationary cars rear wheels start turning the steering wheel counter clockwise (now this might be too close for you, if so, use your cars front wheels...it will give more room). Be sure to watch the front of your car so you don't hit the stationary cars rear bumper. How much lean do you put the car in? Not a full steering lock, as you don't want the rear left wheel to hit the curb, but about a medium lock. It's about getting a feel for the technique. Shallow for learners, and not too deep. Note, I said they give you a lot of room in the tests to reverse...so use it. Don't go deep. You will slot in behind the car and roughly when your front bumper is clear of the end of the other car, turn the steering wheel sharply clockwise. Then straighten it up. You might need a few minor corrections to ensure you are not more than 80cm from the curb. Use them. Over 80cm equals a fail BTW.

Just get someone who is calm and a good teacher/instructor to show you. I got it first go with the right instructor. BTW, I am meaning get a competent driver to show you. All the women I know were bad instructors, especially with reverse parking. Not all women, but my relatives none the less. If they cannot do it themselves comfortably, then they cannot teach you. The same goes for men. Some men are down right atrocious.

So why didn't you say players signed then?

There is a big difference between players signed and ones that are just scouted.

When deals are agreed and given permission by the selling club is when medicals happen. They don't happen when you are scouting players and no club will have access to a player's blood profile when you are just scouting. Arsenal scout umpteen amount of players each season like Lars Bender with Leverkusen where they had a bid turned down for this season or Etienne Capoue who Grimandi watched regularly. No way would they have access to any medical records when they are just being scouted with the possibility that you might bid and try sign the player. Only medicals occur when a deal is done or close to being done is when a club will get the go ahead to do medical tests and even more so down the road after the player signed.

I commend Wenger for his anti doping stance.Maybe things have changed because their back room is now heavily populated from rugby union.
When they were beaten by Barcelona in the Champions league I was shocked at how much fitter Barca seemed to be.I am sure it was a shock to Wenger too and hope it wasn't a turning point for him with regard to "preparation"

Yeah, of course they're not going to get their hands on the medical files.

Don't be absurd! If you want a file, you can get it. The actual in house tests occur AFTER they've been signed, like you said. But if you want the damn files, you get them BEFORE hand. No cycling team would hire someone before seeing the engine.

If what you claim is true, what players on Arsenal had the bad blood profiles? Shouldn't be too hard for you to figure out then. The managers know who is doping...it's obvious. Oh but not to you...not my problem. Your problem.

Arsenal scout so many players it isn't funny. Or so the papers proclaim. They apparently sign just as many. Keep telling yourself that!

Like simo1733 says...pay attention. Some coaches get results because they dope their squads. Wenger says it's off, it's off. One he's French. Two, he fields a very consistent team, without abusing a massive budget courtesy of a billionaire against teams well known to be massively questionable doping wise. But you want to debate semantics? Pedantic is what it is.

Atlantic

So, apparently a not-even-2-years ban for a convicted repeat drug offender (who keeps playing while on appeal) is "excessive" but pointing out that other players are doping is grounds for a life-time ban in baseball.

Cycling-omerta is a joke compared to that.

Everyone knows that all players that are scouted doesn't mean it necessarily will end up with a bid. Wilfred Zaha being a prime example where Pat Rice and Arsenal's chief scout Steve Rowley were watching him regularly in case Theo Walcott wouldn't sign a new deal. In the end he did and the interest ended as a result with no bid.

New Zealand cricketer banned for 6 months for tainted supplement

Ryder underwent a routine drug test while playing a Ford Trophy match for Wellington on March 24. He tested positive for 1-Phenylbutan-2-amine (PBA) and N, alpha-diethyl-benzeneethanamine (DEBEA), which are banned in sports.

The mandatory punishment for a drug violation is a two-year ban, but Ryder was given a lighter sentence because he could establish that he did not use drugs to improve his performance. He was also able to attribute the source of the drugs to a dietary supplement that he was taking as part of a weight-loss programme.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/newzealand/content/current/story/663593.html

I feel bad for him.. You cant trust any supplements these days with many unlisted (banned) substances which are hardly performance enhancing compared to other PEDs

Hes had troubles with drinking during his career and earlier this year he was put into a coma after being hit from behind

Kinda sad as hes a good batsmen

Yes oldest excuse in the book
Alot of people here have been getting busted for Dimethylamylamine(DMAA) which is a often hidden ingrediant in protein shakes and the like

it does occasionally happen. Christie blamed supps I think, but no-one seriously believed him. Callum Priestley, for example, was screwed over by UK athletics, left the sport.

I am still amazed that athletes of any caliber take em. Every anti-doping body has warnings against doing so, cases keep coming up, and still people take the risk.

I'm never going to be asked to pee in a cup (well outside of screenings for recreation stuff at work), and I won't touch em. There is too much crap thrown into some of them, you literally don't know what you are consuming.
