Aru recently did a bit of CX for the first time since the u23 ranks.
The level of the Italian domestic scene is what it is (besides 2-3 riders), but in 3 races he finished 4th, 15h and 6th, so not too shabby.

I get that Italy doesn't have too many good CX riders besides Bertolini and Dorigoni, but still.
The national coach Scotti is selecting him to get some headlines, the guy seems to be an unpleasant person and gets really butthurt if riders actually focus a lot on MTB during the summer, in my opinion he's the worst of all the Italian cycling related national coaches.

Good, so he was mainly there to help the CX national team to get some extra media attention.
Don't get me wrong, he had good results and it's great that he enjoys riding cross in the off-season, but taking him to the WC would have been a bit too much.
