Center for Public Health (Liverpool Moores University) publishes their latest survey of users of Steroid and image enhancing drugs

One key finding for public health is that there is essentially no sharing of injection paraphenalia.

Nothing super outstanding in the report, they admit they are missing from the survey a known to be sizeable group of South Asian users (Indian/Pakistani).

Worth a read if you have the time. I wish they covered the routes of acquisition in more detail in the survey.

I would think they could have some general questions without too much issue.

buy from person at gym
Buy online (UK)
Buy online (EU)
Buy online (Other international)

But the essence of a survey of an illegal act is to balance getting the information you want without scaring the folks you need to answer away.

Like they wouldn't see there was no motor as soon as they pulled out the crank and there wasn't a differential gear.

Seems like a mechanical feint to distract from actual doping.

You expect athletes to push the boundaries in terms of enhancing performance. But where do you draw the line between this and outright cheating? It's very difficult to say. The athletes themselves appear none the wiser and frankly start looking suspicious.

Looking back at the entire LA/Postal debacle, it doesn't appear to be as bad as it's actually been made out to be.

Let's not kid ourselves. It's their game to push the boundaries to get a leg over one another.

Gladiators, we salute you! :D

Serious question, how is it decided what is illegal drugs and what isn't? Many athletes both professional & amateur take supplements to improve performance and recovery, many of which are legal e.g protein/recovery shakes and electrolyte drinks

If it is on the WADA list or not (for the sports generally discussed here) is the sole arbiter of legal performance enhancement, or illegal.

There are many factors for a substance being on that list, risks, prevalence etc.

As an example:
Caffeine used to be on the list, and now isn't as the evidence for it being a performance enhancing short term stimulant (think power events) showed that as your dosage goes up, performance actually goes down. (think jitters etc). It is well know and shown to be performance enhancing in endurance events, but at dosages that correlate with drink a couple of cups of coffee.

IIRC under the NCAA doping rules (US college), which uses a different list, caffeine is prohibited above a specified threshold.

Fabio Taborre tested positive for FG-4592.
http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/taborre-positive-for-novel-epo-stimulating-drug-fg-4592/

FG-4592 is a compound that is still in phase 3 clinical trials and has not yet been commercialised. Also known as Roxadustat, the drug was developed jointly by FibroGen and AstraZeneca. Unlike EPO, which directly stimulates the production of red blood cells, FG-4592 is taken orally, and stimulates natural production of EPO in a manner similar to altitude training.

I was listening to the Joe Rogan Experience (his podcast) and one of his guests mentioned being told about a story from a US WADA official about arriving at a hotel and noticing that a team official was in the lobby who then jumps on his cell, the official makes his way up to the rider's room to find the rider with a bunch of saline drips inserted into the rider which apparently is a tactic to obscure test results.

At which point the WADA official busted the guy for breaching the no needles rule, right, handed him an on-the-spot two year ban?

Reda is one of them, confirmed. EPO.
I hope he gets life ban. Doesn't deserve anything less.

The abuse Reda and his team, plus a few Italian cycling hacks who came in on his side, gave to plenty at the Ras in Ireland this year was appalling.

No it wasn't. Reda's tweet was funny in a rage filled garbled English sort of way. And there was quite a bit of grumbling in Irish cycling circles about a dirty furriner disgracing the jersey with his druggy ways that was never heard about Irish dopers, which was simply rank hypocrisy.

That said, if ever there was a doping positive announced where you didn't need to look at the body of the announcement to know the suspended rider's name this was it.

Missed your reply ZV.

But no it wasn't. Team was going to pull out of the race. Italian Journalists took Shane Stokes (and others) to town over it, for some reason. Those guys never apologised to Stokes after Reda's positive, not that i ( or he i guess) expected any.

Sport full of Reda's and people willing to be their lackies.

Jeff Novitzky will be on the Joe Rogan Experience next week. I've heard a few quips from Joe about his past conversations with Jeff and based on that it will be very interesting.

3 labs shut down in the UK

http://www.nationalcrimeagency.gov.uk/news/693-international-agencies-target-underground-steroid-laboratories

one quote:
Worldwide, the operation to date has resulted in the arrest of at least 99 individuals and the closure of 19 underground steroid labs. Intelligence from the US has been disseminated to 15 countries, highlighting the global nature of the trade in steroids, manufacturing ingredients and equipment.

The coordinated activity is a response to the threat to the public from the unregulated, low quality, performance enhancing drugs produced by these criminal labs.

Here is hoping to more take downs and more arrests.

interesting.

“Athletes or gym users - today's events should demonstrate the risk you take if you buy and use non prescribed drugs to cheat in sport or fake a healthy body. You could be permanently harmed or die as a result of a bad decision and the criminal activity of others.”
I think what she meant to say is "today's events should demonstrate that, although we hardly catch any athletes doping, PEDs are in fact widespread and easily available in the UK"
