If you're looking for a similar recent incident, maybe Gesink is a better comparison. He broke his femur in three places.
Or Gerdemann, who took about 3 years to return to a somewhat decent level (I thought he was doing ok last year)

Yes, but with Gerdemann, it might have other reasons. He had this crash in Tirreno 2008, and was great in autumn 2008, at Tour de l´Ain, some one-day races and especially Deutschland Tour.

An Aussie who rides for GreenEdge would be my guess.

EDIT: I think it is Adam Hansen (Lotto), 'cause if his room mate is JVDB then it matches with the *name* doping part.

So I think it is the room mate of JVDB, and since it is an Aussie site, my guess is Adam Hansen.

Could it be Bernie Eisel?

Ballan didn't just break a femur...
He has been on surgery two times already (one for the spleen and one for the femur). Now doctors are confident he should be fine but there's still risk they'll be forced to remove his kidney. In that case his career would be basically over.

Maarten Tjallingii has one kidney.

What now?
Just sayin', it's possible to be a pro rider at a decent level with one kidney. Every other interpretation is your own.

Ofc it's my assumption. If you think losing a kidney will have no effect on his career is your interpretation. None of us will know the truth until we see it I guess.

Yes. One kidney was removed when he was two years old, due to a tumor.

It is possible that due to the young age the other kidney has adapted to handling the amount of work for two kidneys. But at Ballan's age it is quite hard to recover.

In Spanish but nice little article about Freire where he talks a little about his career and what it was like being a top 1 day rider in "climber country".

Let's wait until after his possible doping suspension is over. Vino also retired. ;)

At the end of the article it says Barredo already has a job in a cafe. Hes not that big a name either so has no team to return to. I dont think anyone would take a risk on him hell be 34 by the time he comes back.

Certainly not at the top level. I could imagine Andalucía or one of the Portuguese teams taking a flyer on him, but realistically the best he could hope for is something like Utensilnord like happened to Patxi Vila.

Yeah, but didn't Ricardo Ricco also want to become a bartender?

Few weeks(or days) later he already wanted to return. Barredo is a decent rider, he'd find a decent Pro-Conti team if he ever wants to return.

He could go and become a tt specialist in Colombia :p

Anyway its a really sad because i remember harmonn telling the story of how as a little kid he wanted a new bike.and his dad.and brother told him he could only get it if he managed to.climb some local mountain which was very difficult but he.managed it. And from the hopes and.dreams of wanting to.ride a bycicle and having the talent to do.so, to 20 years later end up serving coffee.

What's wrong with this picture:(
