The problem is always the case of, how long do you wait? The fact Dumoulin made it so far through the stage meant we didn't have a situation like Basso in 2005, but it does make me think of 2010 and the sterrato stage, after Nibali crashed in the maglia rosa. Rohregger and Gerdemann were at the front with Vino and Evans, and the latter two were happily sitting up and had little problem with allowing Nibali to come back, but the Milram riders were stagehunting and didn't feel the same obligation to wait, and once they attacked it was open season again. Once you've got a small group, all it takes is one rider to decide enough is enough, and then the riders can't be obliged to wait anymore. Because sure, it would be nice if Tom had the chance to get back... but you also can't let somebody dangerous like Zakarin gain time for free.
