just looked back some giro's of the last 10 years.

It's actually not even looking that bad for quintana and co. Hell even Aru got 2'20 on Contador in the final mountain stage, and that was just a 2 mountain stage with a relative flat run-in. If you crack on the penultimate climb, things go fast.
That was Contador, a much better climber, cracking.. vs Aru, a much lesser climber than Quintana. So if anything goes wrong, anyone can still win.

You're forgetting the previous stage: Contador had a mechanical and Astana went full gas. Contador went way deep deep into the red to catch Aru and Landa. That was the undoing of Contador's double attempt. He was empty after that.

I expect to Quintana to win but how much time would Dumoulin be happy to give up on this stage? Max of 2mins?

2 minutes is too much. If that happens, Dumoulin's chances of winning the Giro drop dramatically imo.

Sunweb should send a few guys in break. Including Ten Dam. They do not need to make pace in peloton.

Control Movistar guys during the flat before Mortirolo, hope a break goes away without Movistar riders before the Mortirolo.
If the break doesn't form before the Mortirolo make sure that ten Dam joins the breakaway that forms on the Mortirolo.

I guess that's the ideal situation.

I just can't see how this will be a dull stage.

It's clearly the best opportunity for Quintana (and anyone else other than Dumoulin who might have designs on the overall win) to make significant time. They know they have to drop Dumoulin on the penultimate climb so there should be fireworks.

My prediction is that Landa goes in the break on the first climb. Movistar then light it up on Stelvio with Quintana eventually dropping everyone and riding across to Landa. They then work together, leaving Dumoulin forced to drag the group of other podium contenders.

Landa for the win, with Quintana gaining two minutes on Dumoulin.

You think so? I don't. If Quintana doesn't get 2 minutes here, it almost over for him. If Dumoulin loses 2 min, it not that big of a deal.

Gaining time on the rest of the mountain stages is much harder. Piancavallo suits Tom D very well.

+1
this is a best stage to gain a time, multiple and hard mountains and Quintana need to be more then 90s ahead of Tom before TT, maybe even 120 to win this

Hardly just that effort, more or less the whole Giro was extremely hard ridden. It was no wonder he was completely gassed in the Tour, heck you could even see he was done for on Finestre after the very good performances on the TT and Mortirolo which him the race.

Just watched an interview where Nairo said that they will attack and try to put pressure on Dumoulin. Not a secret but it was nice to see him saying it.

I agree with lots of posters about Landa for the win. I think Kruijswijk will move up to 6th and Pinot will gain on Quintana. I also think Valverde may end up leading Movistar at the Tour. I just get a feeling of something just not quite being right with Quintana. Obviously he'll now win the stage by 5 minutes.

You really believe Landa will win this stage? Quite a hype for what he done (or he did not) so far

somewhere between 1 and 1.5, imo. Would give Dumo still 2.5-3 minutes to play with, with the hardest stage behind him.

Sounds like Movi isn't pushing hard yet, is it too early to speculate Quintana not feeling great?

no use pushing it hard right now, wait for Mortirolo and Stelvio

If Cyclingnews live report is right, Quintana is not happy with his team and ordered them to pick up the pace at the front of the bunch.

Wasting resources. No point pushing the pace on the flat and burning domestiques
