BREAKING

From a local newspaper... stage 16 will be: *drums rolling*
Mortirolo...
Umbrail from Bormio!
Stelvio from Prato!
Finish in Bormio!

To be fair, somebody on the cicloweb forum had already told us weeks ago, but since that would imply descending the same side of the Stelvio they'd be climbing earlier, I thought it was bull. But hey, now it's an "official" rumour so I'm gonna post it, hoping it is indeed true.

On a side note, the start of the following stage is still claimed to be Tirano, which implies the finish will not be Piancavallo, which then must be stage 19 or 20.

Considering that stage 17 starts in Tirano and stage 16 is a beast, I think it'll go flat(..tish) to somewhere in Veneto, and Piancavallo will be stage 18.

My bet for last week:

-Rovetta-Bormio
-Tirano-Pampeago (San Lugano, Pampeago,Lavazze,Pampeago) or Monte Bondone.
-Cavalese (or Trento)-Treviso (SPRINT)
-Treviso-Piancavallo
-Pordenone-Passo Pordoi/Selva di Val Gardena/Tre Cime/Kronplatz
-Venecia

Ridiculously hard, but not a particularly great stage design with the amount of false flat in between the big climbs.

Also, there's a good chance this stage will get cancelled because of the avalanche danger on the Swiss side of Umbrail and the Prato side of Stelvio, if not because of possible extreme weather. The last two times the Giro tried to have a stage with a Stelvio ascent & descent it was either cancelled or would have been cancelled today, with the extreme weather protocol in place.

I find very hard to believe there would be a mountain stage after the Stelvio. Furthermore, Vegni has always put a flat stage on stage 17 (when stage 16 was mountainous).

Well yes, but in an edition where it could be the only stage at really high altitude, it's worth the risk. Plus, if the weather is really bad they can finish in Bormio straight after the Mortirolo. Not bad as a plan B.

Wasn't it announced that the race will be fully in Italy? Umbrail Pass (or its descent) is in Switzerland?
Either way, it's too good to be true...

"announced"... no. It was simply said it would be all in Italy. Don't think they'll have any problems to sneak in a few kms in Switzerland... After all nobody would have complained with a Cuneo - Pinerolo.

In the local newspaper is confirmed the start from Rovetta?
With such start location if they'll climb also Presolana and Vivione before Mortirolo would be crazy
they say they'll start there, yes, but say nothing about Presolana and Vivione. I don't think they'll climb them, it would make for one of the stages with the most altitude gain ever.

This sounds very good. Looks like it will be an insanely hard 3rd week!

Quintana was hinting the Giro 2017 was a possibility if he liked the route.
Please, no. He should focus on the Tour after he's beaten Froome in Spain. With Quintana in, the Giro's got a big favorite. Otherwise Nibali, Aru, Bardet, Landa probably even Kruijswijk and Chaves are all on equal level while everyone has his strength as well as his weakness on paper. There is a high chance for big drama on paper!

Mother of Zomegnan, that's a decent amount of great climbs before the Stelvio.
I really like that stage, finally Stelvio from Prato once again and a descent finish, I like it!

Apparently today Vegni said the giro will touch 16 regions (out of 20), and that will be all Italian besides a few kms :D Basically he confirmed the Bormio rumour.

The regions it won't touch, that's a good puzzle. I'd say surely Aosta, Liguria and Campania are out. then there are 3 regions that don't quite fit in my scheme: Tuscany, Marche and Lazio. Marche yould be touched in the stage to Bagno di Romagna, while Lazio would be in if the terminillo (or Rome) is in.

have you investigated about those Giro cars in your hometown? :p
Sorry, I've been pretty busy because I'm moving to Vienna, right now I can't confirm a possible stage, as soon as someone who should involved in the whole thing confirms it I'll post it.
