If stage 13 starts somewhere near Pistoia they could make a good medium mountain stage between Tuscany and Emilia instead a flat stage.
yes but they'll be coming from two hilly stages in a row. Don't think they'd go for a third.
Stage 12 has lot less potential for an insteresting profile, coming from Forlì i imagine they cross the Appennines between Romagna Toscana and Mugello, it's the lowest part of Appennines. They could use this stage for a sprinter friendly profile, flat start, Passo del Giogo, the Sieve valley than a light hill to come here in Florence and all flat to Pistoia with a final circuit.

For the day after a well designed stage around 200 km long between something like Lucca and Parma could be very hard with 5/6 medium mountain passess.

a lot less potential? Finishing with the Valico dell'Acquerino and Sammomme' would already be enough regardless of what comes before... there are so many hills around Pistoia, I don't really see any problems there.

How far would Maniago be after the descent. I assume they'll climb the hard side?
Maniago would be 30-40 km after the top of Piancavallo. Yes, hard side. 15 km of descent and then 15-25 km of a hilly valley depending on the actual route they choose.
15-25km a tad too much for my liking :( . I fear that might limit action even though the climb is absolutely perfect to create action.

I would take this tbh.

That looks great, but then you don't know if they'll take that route or go completely flat afterward. Still, I like a finish after a descent better anyway, as it seems there's already 3 MTF's in that final week. What I dislike is the first 80km. This is the Giro, need at least 3 more climbs to be a legit mountain stage ffs.

But are only hills, in a route around the regional border that could be stage 13 if well designed you could have a series of passes like Abetone, San Pellegrino in Alpe, Pradarena, Lagastrello, Cirone.

If stage 13 is hilly it would go to a breakaway, considering stage 14 will be an important ITT. I really prefer it to be flat. Makes more sense.

There's only one alternative road, 15 km mostly flat, that includes a 4 km tunnel. So I consider it less likely. Hopefully.

The Piancavallo stage with a downhill finish is way better. But I think that would rather be a good stage for the penultimate weekend, because I doubt anything would happen with the Pordoi stage on the next day. And I would also prefer Terminillo on stage 8 and then another hilly or mountain stage on stage 9, preferable something with Lanciano. Did the rumors about Terminillo specifically say the stage will be before a rest day or do you only place it there simply because a mountain stage on stage 9 makes sense?

The latter. Terminillo will be either on stage 8 or 9, but the whole first week is still hanging to the starting location decision, so it is all very fluid :p

Yes, you are right in this case but IMHO the Appennines are underused and probably also underrated. They could design a really hard mountain stage in some areas. In the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano you can have a stage of over 200 km with 5/6 consecutive passes without flat. In Abruzzo you could have a MTF at over 2.000 m (Campo Imperatore). But also in Umbria you have the area around Castelluccio where you can design a stage with multiple climbs. Seems that RCS looks at the Appennines only for hilly stages or at least some classic MTF like Terminillo or Montevergine ignoring the potential for mountain stages they have.

Apparently the recent change of property of the RCS group is delaying matters for the start location deal.

Otoh, there are big news. The newspaper La Stampa (usually very reliable when it comes to this) claims that stage 13 will finish in Tortona, while stage 14 will be Castellania (Coppi's birthplace) - Oropa. The Oropa rumour started early this week, so I would trust it. On Sunday there would be room to go to the Presolana, and this would explain why they're coming from west. Although this pushes back or forward the ITT, so I would say there's a big chance the structure of the Giro has been changed...

Oropa? Meh. The only thing that place is good for is remembering Pantani. I'm no fan of it.

The ITT would almost have to be stage 16, no? (if Franciacorta holds up)
well it could also be stage 12. Stage 16 was rumoured to start in Bergamo, as part of the Presolana deal, so I don't know.

Got to be due some news soon? Come on guys, we need to sort our spring flights!
all silent for now. Apparently the presentation will not be after Lombardia, but at the end of October.

Oh the anticipation... Will give us something to plan at the end of the season at least!
