Giro d'Italia 2017 rumours - Il Centesimo

I would like to have some epic stage in region Cuneo/Torino, last finishes there always been fun, like Pantani with Savoldeli on Fauniera 1999 or Frigo over Simoni on Chianale finish 2003 with snow in downhill

Tre Cime di Lavaredo finish with Giau before, Zoncolan with Crostis and other stages would be nice, but still depends how cyclist will race stages

A local newspaper stated that stage 15 will not finish on the Presolana, but in Bergamo. If we assume they'll come from Oropa, it will probably be a Lombardia-like stage. According to the same article the last rest day is confirmed to be there, and stage 16 will start somewhere in the valley north of the city.

That would fit in with the earlier Ghisallo rumour, I guess

Or maybe the Franciacorta ITT will be stage 16, and then stage 17 will head north, to end on Stelvio? Then maybe a flat/breakaway stage 18, stage 19 could be Piancavallo/Maniago and stage 20 would be Fedaia/Pordoi?

Also, do we know where the race will finish? Given that the decisive stages seem to be in the Trentino-South Tirol/Friuli area, it would seem unlikely that they would then go back to Milan. For me, though, it seems unlikely the 100th Giro would not end there... any rumours?

edit: never mind, I just remembered the 2012 Giro went from Stelvio to Milan for the final stage, so they could replicate that in 2017 :D .

Does this mean Sardinia > Sicily > travel north up the country? Or does Sardinia mean they'll skip Sicily?

I get so excited when I see Eshnar bumping the second best thread on the forums. :D :D

I would expect a stage in Sicily, but it's still doubtful. Especially since all the recent rumours point at north, so if they have to start on stage 4 from Sicily it'll be a hell of a distance to be covered in a handful stages.

Unfortunately this year the rumours still have to pick up... RCS are taking their time.

If they start on Sardinia and move north from Sicily later on, they normally should include a proper first mountain in the Apennines like Blockhaus. Instead there's only Campitello Matese rumored, right!?
Terminillo. Campitello Matese was never rumoured.

Re:

A couple of months ago local newspapers suggests Montevergine for 2017 because there were problems in 2016 (as originally planned). I read also something about Vesuvio.

For Terminillo could be a problem find proper streets for the stage after the earthquake in the area.

local newspapers confirmed the Grande Partenza to be in Sardinia with three stages.
The actual locations are still unknown.

Great news to come back to for us! Now to confirm personal racing plans (it's this or the final week) & get organised. Feels a slow burner on information but hoping they'll firm some details up during the autumn classics??

A bit off-topic here, but any news about the planned Giro del Euregio? I only found the old newspaper articles from April but there ain't no new information available. Hopefully it ain't got cancelled. But normally the tourist offices of (South) Tyrol & Trentino should be able to attract the race organization with a big paycheck!

Local newspapers have just confirmed stage 16 as Stelvio MTF. Apparently via Mortirolo, although they don't say which side. I would think it will be the one from Monno (the one with the Contador ramp). The following stage will start from Tirano.
The official reveal of the Grande Partenza will be on Sept.14th.

A Stelvio MTF is just meh, it's one of the worst things that you can do with that climb, but at least with the Mortirolo before it and right after the rest day it could be fun (yeah, I'm still in denial when it comes to the e 2012 Giro).
The same stage with a finish in Sulden/Solda on the other hand, that would be pure awesomeness.

agreed. Also, it's clear by now that Stelvio "beat" Aprica. That's the worst part of the news :(
Well I think it kind of makes sense. We've had Mortirolo-Aprica in 2015 and it would be lame to use the combination again only two years later, so they decide to use it again but with a completely different finish (basically the same thing they did in 2012 after Mortirolo-Aprica was already used in 2010). However ofc. from a racing perspective the stage would be better with an Aprica finish. Is there a chance that the stage to the Stelvio also goes over the Gavia? Mortirolo-Gavia-Stelvio still wouldn't really be satisfying since a Stelvio mtf is always lame, but it would at least be one hell of a stage.

Edit: And ofc I also agree that a Sulden mtf would be awesome and the stage would be a lot like stage 20 of my Race Design Challenge giro, which I would personally find cool too ;) :D

no, the article mentions that the plan A was Gavia - Mortirolo, but it got cancelled because of worries about the road surface of the Gavia and in particular a landslide on its descent. So, definitely no Gavia next year.

Let's focus on the positive things, it means that the Mortirolo will be closer to the final. Anyway, from what I've read I'm not very happy with the route. I don't like Oropa (I know the story about Pantani, but we just had a Pantani tribute with an Oropa stage two years ago and the climb itself really isn't that great), Stelvio as a mtf is a waste, the Bergamo stage could be interesting but I don't know if the stage can be hard enough to cause gc action and Piancavallo has nothing to do in the 100th giro, go to the Zoncolan god dammit. The only thing I really like is the likely Dolomites stage.
