Also, I will never understand the motivation behind riders like Stybar joining mountain breakaways. Yesterday, both Van Poppel and Van Emden confessed it wasn't the plan for them to join and they kept wondering what they were doing up there

I think Stybar is excited by the prospect of mud on the Finestre. The Cima Coppi is up for grabs there if nothing else.

Yes, could have needed a tougher climb or an even longer stage to establish a more useful break. Was always the problem with this design, IMO.

Lys is fairly hard, there's 6k at 7%. It's just been incredibly frantic with a very high pace. At least MS will be very tired once they reach finestre, though.

Yeah, I obviously dont know anything about that, I just remembered the Mont Cenis in 2005

They could have used Moncenisio but that climb would have been directly before the finestre and not at the beginning of the stage. That said, they could have made a super hard 200+ km stage by using both Lys and Moncenisio

If the gap doesn't go out sometime there's no way the break makes it up finestre.

Plus Yates can fully use hit big guys in the flat section right now, because they won't be of use later anyways.

Might as well use Chaves up as well.

Moncenisio and Lys isn't possible.

Best alternative is probably Sestriere/Finestre/Sestriere/Jafferau, but that might be super long.

Altenatively, I'd want to replace Sestriere by Colle Basset.

Do you mean it's not possible because it's too hard? Because logistically it is possible (I'm talking about the Moncenisio climb used in 2009)
