We got spoiled last year with that first week. They were never gonna trump that, or get even close. With two tragic days knocked out of this week on top, it's not surprising that some expectations are not met.

For me the 2010 Giro became less interesting over time, certainly week 3 felt a tad underwhelming. I hope this one follows the more normal GT pattern.

What giro were you watching?

So disappointed in Machado. Di Luca also sucked, and Ulissi isn't taking cycling by storm anytime soon.

126 people in, no Duarte. That probably goes beyond "sucked" and right into "had some sort of problem".
Isn't Ulissi just a pure domestique in this race?

Duarte 15.09 down on the stage winner!

Ok I know you are working for Menchov but this is ridiculous!

Of course, but in my wildest dreams he pulled a Cunego.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry about Duarte. He arrived with Porte, which means he will win a GT.

Duarte was 141, finished behind napolitano. I'm assuming he crashed or something.
Or he really doesn't like a high paced stage on relatively moderate climbs, which goes for more lightweights.

KENNAUGH Peter arrived before Duarte!

I see Duarte is not interested in nothing but to assist his leaders.:(

more likely he had a very bad day as usual, or he's sick, but I think the first. duarte is very inconsistant that's why he could never do well in vuelta colombia

Great stage, De Clercq beats Scarponi on the finish line, only yesterday it was Ventoso edging out Petacchi.

Can't complain at lack of dramatics in the finishes.

Ryo..that goes well beyond a bad day...does he have trouble with eating? What usually is the problem?

Problem is the expectations here. Kid is young and riding his first GT.
This is only the 7th stage, the climb was easy, I'm pretty sure Freire could have won this and Duarte lost 15 minutes. Duarte is not some random schmuck, he's an u23 world champion and he recently won a mountain stage in Trentino ahead of people like Scarponi. Expectations weren't the problem.

But there is a type of rider that hates these false flattish endlessly long uphill slogs. Maybe he belongs to that type.

He is not that young, pretty much the same age as Gesink and Kreuziger, who have multiple top-10 under their belt, and were pretty consitent in their first GC (at a younger age). But they probably are more talented of course. It's disappointing he is performing so bad in an easy stage in the first week.

no he's just inconsistant and I mean really inconsistant in colombia he could switch days with riding everyone on minutes to losing 30 minutes in a stage. could also be a crash or sickness I don't know let;s wait
