And the Vuelta too.....Jan did not like the cold or the rain :)

It is too bad that Jan's tactical acumen was never developed. The tactics of the day had the Tour decided by a few Mountain top finish. "Tactics" were replaced by Watt/kg

Jan showed flashes of brilliance in a few German races and the 2000 Olympic road race, it would have been interesting to see how he would have done in the classics

Loved watching Jan ride.
When the temps soared he would thrive...others wilted.
He is the one rider I miss most of all....

2) by raising it to 50%, he would increase his V02 max about 7%

Is this what Armstrong, Ullrich, Pantani, etc were doing? They weren't raising it to 60% instead? I was under the impression that it was really easy, especially for Armstrong, to saline down below 50% just before the tests.

All of these values were above 40, except for one value of 38.2 at the end of the Giro, when a lower than natural HT is expected because of plasma expansion.

The mean HT value for LA is close to the average, which is in the range of 42-44.

Nope, Lance own numbers had his off season baseline as 39-40

JV has a pretty good example of how to gain 10% in this post

Sorry Franklin

I didn't write that sentence properly :
It was meant to be in context with obligatory visits , US appearances races etc. for fans and sponsors and anything else that could be marketed including the bike industry as a whole .
Nothing suspicious just a matter of job related appearances as any pro would do. Then there is family and other issues that need to be dealt with. etc.

No need to be sorry, I understood what you meant and we agree ;)

On a side note, did he actually race in the USA besides the Coors Classic when he was a Euro-pro? AFAIK his sponsor obligations were pretty much in Europe?

yes true, Euro sponsors , I don't know how many races he raced in the States , but it does take time out of a Euro schedule even if its a few. \
It does however promote the sport and brings it home too the fans.
Remembering how cycling was on an upswing back then, it was very important.

I will never say that Jan raced as much as GL.

But your commentary that he raced one month a year is wrong. Jan certainly raced more than Lancey, and attended the Worlds and Olympics in multiple years.

Do some research.

When I have time I will go on for 2000 and onwards but it is fair to say from 1998 onwards Jan had a few issues in the lead up to GT's and in a few weeks time was on top of his form. Or, also possible, Jan decided only to use EPO for his important month of the year?

Superbe info!

It's interesting to see that in 97-98 he had such a different build up (1999 is a bit dificult to compare due to his health). I'm betting you will see that the next years will be more like 98, but if you have the time it's interesting.

I remain sceptical it says anything about doping though, considering known dopers have a much more spread out schedule. I guess it shows the problems Jan had.

On the Epo decision... I doubt that. I don't believe Jan was having qualms about using doping. If anyone decided it it will have been his personal trainer/doctor.

I havent heard Teteriouk, Hoshovd, Boardman wanting their weldeserved medals. Off course that is assuming Ekimov was doping at that time. An educated guess is that of course.

You of course are right but lets face it, who should be given Jan's medal? Jalabert? The next on the list, Teteriuk? Hushovd? Gonzalez Capilla? Honchar? Big lol there by the way.

Let him have his silly medal. That whole era was a joke.

They haven't given the bronze to anyone else so why should they do it with the silver? Cheaters don't deserve medals. If they haven't understood that by the time they reach 40 they need to go back to kindergarten and have their toys taken away from them.

You are of course right.

Yet my point stands. Why havent the clean riders of that time come forward and say ''hey, I was clean there, that is my medal!''. I personly would be pretty pee offed and would speak up. It also could be the case there were not a lot of clean ones in the pelotoon at that time. One of the cleaner ones in the TT would be Hushovd, riding for Credit Agricole and all, we have not heard from him. Maybe in the future.

Yeah let's give him the medal - what does an Olympic medal mean anyway? It isn't the pinnacle of sporting achievement anyway, so why should the fact that he cheated to gain it matter as to whether he should retain it or not?

Fearless Greg Lemond said:
Perhaps for you. To me the Olympics are just a silly once in four years escapede of nationalistic and commercial BS.

But hey, opinions differ.

Yes and the IOC is a cove of mendacious, corrupt and sanctimonious hypocrites.

Ullrich should be forced to hand in his medals, only if he is sanctioned for doping during those games. Yet, for the German's own psyche, handing them over would probably be cathartic. In this sense, perhaps he's got more to lose than gain in keeping them.

What some people want to see in the Olympics as a "noble and virtuous" expression of athletics is their own business.

The IOC would chose not to give it to anyone, but i don't really care about medals.

What I do care about is the myth of the level playing field. It was not level, not even close.

I agree.

The whole sport is still a joke. But Ullrich could be holding on to his medals as a F**K YOU to the IOC, UCI and others. He might as well, they only go into a vault, supposedly, no reason not to guess that someone in IOC would sell them.
