It's called football and no it wasn't Australia. But Brazil at 140,000+.

South America are much more sport loving and mad than Australians.

Well when Brzil has 9 to 10 times of your population then it is understandable that they would get bigger crowds.

Footy is still Aussie Rules. Rugby is Union or league.

Don't lecture an Aussie on sport. You'll loose.

Footy is AFL or League depending which state your in, Rugby is union

Uhoh, they might take out the 2nd ascent of Monte Willunga just to make it easier for the old guy.

i guess it will be the first year armstrong won't target le tour de france since 1999.:D

Those millions they pay him for spending a few minutes at the front of the pack will come in handy to pay the lawyer's fees.

I thought he retired again after the TDF. Anyone counting the number of comebacks?

Follow the money trail - hope is all about those millions!

No way!!!!!!!! It is very well conserved and the Original Australians get ****ed when people walk on it. The national Park is being reclaimed by them so we'll see what happens there!
Fixed it for you.

But I like the end of the short article:

Armstrong is understood to be the focus of an investigation in the United States concerning allegations of doping in professional cycling.

Just happy they didn't say he was "allegedly understood" to have been "mentioned in connection with" a "rumoured" investigation to "possible minor infractions" done by "so far unknown, but completely unrelated to Mr Armstrong, persons" in... Ah, I give up... Why didn't they just say: "Armstrong - Grand Jury - Fraud - watch this space"

LA is making more comebacks then John Farnham (an English born Aussie singer who made several "retirements").

Well Australia was founded on convicts being shipped out here...

No convicts started SA though - it was a free settlement

Yep. Looking forward to brain dead Aussies cheering Lance on. Looking forward to well researched stories in the local press about extra long thigh bones and massive Vo2 Max levels.

I'm sure we'll see one more leaked email before Lance fires up the jet to Oz.

Go Floyd.

To be honest it just makes a joke out of the TDU. ProTour race my elbow.

Promotion

I'm reading a lot of moaning about Lance getting an appearance fee. This is how a good promoter builds a big race. In anything that is star driven, golf, cycling, political speeches, basketball, etc... attendance goes up when famous people participate. A shrewd promoter knows this and figures the best way to get the biggest names to their events. Especially when you run an obscure event in January in a remote part of the world. In this case, I would say it is money well spent. If Lance had never ridden this race, we would not be writing about it.

You are still allowed to hate Lance to satisfy whatever agendas you have but just know having Lance appear in Australia is good business.

We're not moaning about Lance taking the appearance fee. More power to him if he does, but just laughing at the dumb organizers. Lance never comes out of the peloton. He's invisible except for July.

I'm not laughing - I am annoyed though that still people believe he is doing this for cancer. 'This one's on the house'.

What happens in 2015? What's spending 5 million over 3 years mean then? Are the fans still there from Lance? Of course not. If the SA government want to pay Lance as part of their own version of fiscal stimulus then fine, they can justify that to their taxpayers, but in no way is it a shrewd cycling decision.

I don't think cycling is star driven, races need to grow organically, you can't buy a good race. How many people did Quebec/Montreal pay? Will people even remember that some American showed up for three years in January? Will they care?

I dont understand how its stupid. I am over Lance as much as anyone but unfortunately for publicity and crowd turnouts for the event i think Lance is a major drawcard even though he is over the hill.

I am all for organisers paying better quality riders to come out here but unfortunately you have to get return for investment and Lance is still the biggest drawcard in regard to the Australian Public .

Thats my opinion anyway now im going to watch Liverpool hopefully win a freaking game .

I smell a rat. I think there was a contract signed last year and Lance is coming to collect his cash. He sure needs the funds. And he loves money.*

You wouldn't invite him knowing what's coming up. If you've got spare cash you'd get the Shleck's. I'm not buying it. Mike Turtur is not stupid. He knows what went on in the glory days and now he's signed himself to deal with the Armstrong fall out right before the statute expires. That will be a winner for tourism!

Such short sightedness is so sad. Are they trying to build cycling in Australia or destroy it?

Stupid.

I tend to agree with that. Lots of very dull stages and ending up with Greiple winning the bunch gallop - all very fascinating stuff.

I suppose it brightens up the locals lives seeing Lance and some proper bike riders on a training expedition. Its better than watching a sheep shearing contest , swimming, hockey or god knows what they watch out there.

thanks hog, wasn't sure you knew how to add a link. For all of you who say you know better I will trust the organizer when he says,

"The proof is in the pudding ... if you look at the 2008 race versus 2009 and 2010, the numbers speak for themselves, they're staggering," Turtur said

The groupies here can pretend he's insignificant but he's not, outside of the clinic the guy is relevant no matter the horrible things he has done within the sport. People just don't care and I'd be willing to bet another 10k Australians show up to ride with him. To the poster who said they paid the money and got pack fodder in return, you don't actually follow the sport eh?

Hey hoggie, you should give your insider predictions again. He will never race in 2011, wait he will never enter Australia. Wait, he will never start the TDU, wait...
