If he wanted to make Alberto happy, all Lance needed to do was give him his friendship. Clearly AC could not function without some affection. You could see him devastated at the top of the podium today. That would have been a much better gift than the tour.

Whats really concerning me is that I have a sneaking suspicion that you actually believe the crap you write:eek:

Sarcasm: A form of humor that is marked by mocking with irony, sometimes conveyed in speech with vocal over-emphasis. Saying something that is opposite of what is intended to be meant.

The comments coming out of the media between AC and LA is really quite hilarious but interesting. Maybe AC will write a book about his affair with lance.I think AC has a right to be angry but he is very immature in the way he rides and handles himself in the media. You may not like LA but the way he handles himself in the press is with pure class. He is smmoth as a babies bum

I beg to differ....lance is a ***. The media includes Twitter and all his preteen games that he plays. If you are relying on the english speaking media to make your judgements about Contador then that may be the problem. How is he immature in his dealing with the press...or his riding for that matter...he just won the Tour? If anyone is immature it is lance...he who is closing in on 40 but still likes to hang out with the Olson twins!!! Yea real mature...

LOL. I think you have that a$$ backwards. He played the media circus perfectly, being magnanimous with his words at all times. The same could not be said for Armstrong, with his passive aggressive assault beginning just before the Tour.

And yes Contador has a lot to learn on the road. Like how to lose a grand tour. :p

Not sure if I would define Lance's handling of the press as classy, but rather manipulative genius. Not sure about Europe, but on this side of the pond he has the media (and some members of this forum ;)) drooling over every word. When you hear him talking about how Contador is not a team player, and saying "no comment" when asked questions about Contador's motives, I don't think "classy". He could have so easily said that "Contador did what he had to do to get time on his rivals to win the tour for Astana". The way I saw the tour, he said whatever he could to antagonise the US media against Contador, at every opportune time, whenever he could.

Smart move by Merckx. After having seen what happens to anyone who disobeys his Majesty, The Lance, it's the better part of judgment to put on a happy face. Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. Beware the Intimidator.

Yes but he only did that every time he spoke.

(Sorry, is that irony, sarcasm or tongue in cheek. I think we need a chart hear.)

Here is a partial translation that I just put together. In reference to the last (6th) mini-chapter of the article:

from

http://www.elpais.com/articulo/deportes/uomo/solo/comando/elpepidep/20090727elpepidep_2/Tes

supposedly a serious spanish newspaper.

6. Water on Mt. Ventoux, Champagne in the hotel

A confusing image left lots of cycling fans with the believe that Contador had refused Armstrong's courtesy in the form of a water bottle with the colors of Caisse d'Epargne. The image without the context was misleading. The previous take was missing. "I was in a breakaway and I just got caught by Contador's and Armstrong's group. I rode on the left of the road and when Contador, riding in the middle, got up to me, I offered him my water bottle, because I saw he didn't have any and I am his friend", said Ivan Gutierrez, the cantabrian with the most km in breakaways (581 km without reward). "As soon as I stretched my arm, Armstrong, who was a little behind us riding in the center, got ahead and caught the bottle on the fly, before Alberto did. After Lance drank he offered the bottle to Alberto, but he refused. Lance was going to keep the bottle when I had to remind him it was mine and that I wanted it in return".

This little incident shows the sense of entitlement the seven time Tour winner showed in regards to not only his own team, but the entire peloton. It was Armstrong the person deciding when champagne should be used to toast for the teams achievements: yes to the day of the echelons, surrounded by great cheers, to the TTT; no to the day Contador got his yellow jersey in Verbier or to the Annecy day when he won the ITT. "A funeral to celebrate a yellow jersey", summarized a member of another team. When Alberto was handed his very own glass of champagne at the beginning of the last stage, like it is tradition, he toasted with almost every member of his team, but not with Armstrong.
