Landis letter re drug use in cycling

This has turned into an interesting thread.

I'm hoping no appearance by Floyd. Or if so, just a brief statement.

A grenade in a room someone termed Floyds letters? More like a small sparkler at the moment.
Legally, you are correct. But as far as the public goes, this is a powder keg like none other in the sport's history. Even if nothing pans out, and everyone shuts up, this is going to be remembered as much, if not more, than the Festina affair, Operation Puerto, and a slew of other scandals.

I don't understand why Mr Armstrong and his people released these e-mails. They certainly don't paint Landis in a very bad picture and he comes across as a humble and sincere guy. Where are the threats and blackmail attempts? I cant see them in these letters. If someone blackmailed you, why not contact the relevant authorities? Didn't Letterman do this when he was blackmailed? That guy got charged over his attempts.

Why is it important that you catch people who doped in the past? If young guys coming through the sport see how easy you can cheat the system and the hero-worshipping and fame certain alleged dopers get, then why shouldn't young guys do the same? This especially when you know some of your competitors do the same. If you come from a poor background the choice is very easy.

I also think that if you dope early in your career the decisions you make later will be path-dependant of your early choice. The range of opportunities you have will be limited because of this, this is why I have a hard time believing in people who very much have been a part of a doping culture. Its hard to race clean when you know the benefits of cheating.

I haven't seen anyone mention it yet. Maybe it has been though. Dave Z and Floyd used to be best buddies and live with each other in Girona. That in and of itself doesn't mean much, but if Floyd was having blood extracted in the good old days in Spain before Puerto (that's why they all lived in Spain, because doping wasn't illegal in Spain) then surely Dave would have had some inkling of what was going on? Maybe not, maybe he never seen nothing.

To Americans on here and those that know how the FBI work. With the FBI now involved, are Lance et al really in serious sh**? The reason I ask is that I have no doubt that lance has lied under oath before, so should we expect anything different this time? Kimmage has said on Thursday night that their involvement is a very serious and notable development. For argument sake, Levi lies to agents, then, is caught out on these lies, is this jail time?

Oh and how ironic that Lance's love of the women could be his downfall. Kirsten....and surely Sherly Crowe knows something.

Best of a doped field

"They all dope, Lance is still the best." This is an argument that pops up every so often, but is he?

I read some years ago, somewhere (sorry this is vague and without reference) that Armstrong can, because of his cancer and missing ball, to legally use some therapies unavailable to others. Is this true? Could he be allowed to "regulate" is testosterone level for instance?

That would in my view show that he can dope more than others, not that he is more talented or naturally stronger.

That was a summation of the topic!!:)

No, this is a summation of the topic:

You lied, you faked
You cheated, you changed the stakes
Magnet horseback high in the sky
Unrehearsed, let the bubbles burst
All in all, a three-ring circus
Of unity with parody
Tragedy or comedy
Probably publicity

Open up, make room for me
Now open up, make room for me

Lose myself inside your schemes
Go for the money, honey
Not the screen
Be a movie star, blah blah blah
Go the whole hog
Be bigger than God

Burn Hollywood burn, taking down Tinseltown
Burn Hollywood burn, burn down to the ground
Burn Hollywood burn, burn hollywood burn
Take down Tinseltown, burn down to the ground

Down, into the ground

How many bridges can they burn, till we turn?
How many lives can they take, till we break?
How many dreams terrorized, till we rise?
How many visions will they burn, till we learn?

How many homes set alight, till we fight?
How many futures must we dream, till we scream?
How many sins must they repeat, till we're beat?
How many?
How many times

He had released his TUE forms. That was what allowed a journalist to link him to the 1999 positive EPO tests. He has no TUEs like that.

Lying to a federal agent is a crime. I think it was one of the things Martha Stewart wend down for.

Don't you think you are putting the cart before the horse? No one has even been questioned yet. Try not to get too excited

Oh yes Floyd and thank you for cheating at the first ToC. Thank you for cheating at the tour of georgia. Oh and thank you for cheating at those monumental stage races in europe. you make us so proud Fred Taylor

PS Do you think you might get sued for all the races you cheating in and won? What do you think the clean riders you "beat" feel? Or the promoters or us fans feel? That goes for you too Joe Papp AKA Papillion. Thanks for clearing you conscience. NOT!

can i just point out that landis only failed one test... that means he only doped once, surely...

stop with these mindless allegations that he doped in georgia, cali etc without evidence please..

Thanks for that. Makes very sad viewing - I thought commentators were supposed to be unbiased. Definitely sticking with Eurosport - they have to ditch the horrible "planet Arsehole" now.

+1. Depressing. And we have to listen to this idiot during the Tour.

Read the post before mine. Someone asked theoretically what would happen if Levi got questioned and then was caught out lying, would it be a crime to have lied to federal agents. I was just answering that question, no saying that anyone had done so at this point.

I am now convinced that this artshole is one of the bigger cogs in the wheel/ drive train, whatever. I think Roland might know him. If I remember and repeat what I said to him, he will know it's me, I was not overly thrilled to meet him.

I'm starting to think it might be a good idea to watch cycling coverage in a language I don't understand, at least I can watch the racing and not listen to the mindless dribble. Either that or watch it with the volume down or on mute.

Eurosports ToC commentator came out and took Lances side immediately on Thursday. Basically wrote off Landis' claims saying he was mad and bitter.

I do that a lot now. Not out of some desire to avoid the English-speakers (that's turned out to be a side benefit), but because so little cycling is broadcast in the States (save the races we get on Versus). Oddly, my favorite are the Flemish commentators.

If you mean me, then nah, I don't know anyone involved in the professional ranks. Used to race with a handful as juniors a long time ago, but don't know anyone to speak to.

Yes, you're right, but the commentator was Carlton Kirby who knows nothing about cycling. He seems to be Eurosport's stand in commentator when no one else is available. I supose I could just do without commentry!

Carlton Kirby always was useless. Eurosport use him on shedloads of different sports, and he knows nothing about any of them.

Exactly what I was trying to say - well said that man!
