This looks like a pretty nice race, but ultimately with 7.5 hours of chaotic Italian mountains, it wasn't going to get the attention.

Are you familiar with the terrain in Berlin? Seeing as though you used to live in Germany.

I did live on the other side of the country though! I have visited Berlin a few times though, and most of the area around there is pretty flat. A handful of hills here and there but mostly flat. Kind of like you'd expect of most northern Europe inland areas. If they find some steepish roads to break things up like in the Tour of Denmark, or the superb Steiler Wand von Meerane (which is in Saxony so too far away), they could make a very entertaining race of this. I don't know if there are too many such roads that they can viably use though.

The An Post Ras is on at the moment. This is its 59th edition and the 2.2 UCI event is once again the premier stage race in Ireland. It takes place over eight stages. Past winners include Stephen Roche and Tony Martin and, oddly enough, the brothers of both Pat McQuaid and Paul Kimmage. As an aside, the race was founded by an IRA man who was also a professional boxer and a lawyer as well a cycling enthusast.

The race is the major event of the season for the better Irish amateur teams and it's also of particular importance, unsurprisingly, to the An Post Sean Kelly team. Other teams participating include ISD-Lampre, KTM Murcia, Rapha Condor Sharp, Thuringer Energie, Drapac, AVC Aix en Provence, Giant Kenda, Wonderful Pistachios, Motorpoint and Sigma Sport.

STAGE 2 - Portumna - Kilrush 23 May 2011

This was supposed to be another day for the sprinters, but high winds intervened and the peloton was smashed to pieces. The largest single group came in more than 34 minutes down.

Four men broke away from the leading group of about 25 riders with 30 km to go and they were never caught. Gediminas Bagdonas, a Lithuanian who joined the An Post Sean Kelly team this year beat Shane Archbold of the New Zealand National Team in the final sprint. The young New Zealand track specialist, however, took over the yellow jersey.

STAGE 3 - Kilrush - Castleisland 24 May 2011

The winds died down for stage 3 and the parcours became a little bit hillier, with a short but steep climb on the finishing circuit. Young Bulgarian rider Nikolay Mihaylov and the Ukrainian Oleksandre Shevdyk escaped on the final climb 8 km from the finish and managed to stay clear of a chasing group of 10 riders. Bogdanas of An Post Sean Kelly, finished in that group and took over the yellow jersey.

The race website describes Mihaylov as a sprinter, but it also quotes him as saying that he's a climber and he hopes for a chance to take yellow. Bogdanas said that he was enjoying the biggest race he'd ever been in the lead of, but was more apprehensive about the significantly more hilly route ahead tomorrow.

Tomorrow, the race heads through some of the most beautiful scenery in Ireland, through the West Cork and Kerry mountains. Irish mountains are, of course, not particularly high, but there will be enough short, steep climbs to break things up considerably.

Very entertaining finish in the Circuit de Lorraine

Before final stage, De Gendt was in the lead but Anthony Roux was close enough that a top 3 finish would give him the overall on time bonuses

De Gendt attacked in the echelons himself in the final and looked to have it sown up as Roux was behind, but didn't stay clear and in the end it came down to a bunch sprint

Vacansoleil put both Feillu and Marcato up front to try and take top 3 places to stop Roux from getting bonuses, Feillu won the stage but Roux was 2nd and took the overall

Check out the finish here - have you ever seen anyone so unhappy to win a stage (Feillu) and someone so happy to finish 2nd (Roux)? :D Pretty cool finish IMO

Stage 4 - Castleisland to Castletownbere 25 May 2011

There was a series of large breakaways throughout the day, each of them eventually taken back. Meanwhile, the peloton shrank to a group of about 30 riders. Gediminas Bagdonas of An Post Sean Kelly won the sprint, taking his second stage and keeping the yellow jersey. He will stretch his GC lead a little due to bonifications.

It's also Orgullo Paísa's home race, so they'll have more reason to fight for it. Of course we're in prime Vuelta a Colombia warmup time, so look out Colombia.

Jesus, Félix Cárdenas is still racing in his 39th year. I honestly would have thought he would have retired by now.

Now onto Estonia, and IIRC, it's pretty flat from Tallinn to Tartu.

I always find great entertainment in the fact that what was supposed to be a "Team Michael Rasmussen" is now more or less a "Team Angelo Furlan". :D

It will be interesting to see Furlan in the Post Danmark Rundt sprints (I'm quite sure they'll be invited), and see MR either fail on Kiddesvej or alternatively botch up another time trial.

Predominantly as most of the races they've managed to secure invites to have been flat. There are a bunch of races that they COULD go to if invited or if they had the funding that would suit Rasmussen - but the ones they ARE doing are mostly Danish and northern European, so unless Norway pulls its finger out and creates a good hilly or mountainous race then Furlan is always going to pick up more results through the year than Ras.

Sure, but for the sake of getting my point across I left out that important aspect. ;)
The upcoming Tour of Norway should fit better to Rasmussen, let's see how he does there.

I forgot to keep posting daily updates from the year's greatest cycling race, the 59th An Post Ras. So here's a condensed round up of the final four stage.

Stage 5 - Castletownbere to Blarney, 26th May 2011, 156 km

A long breakaway was slowly getting caught by the main bunch and it looked as if we were in for a bunch sprint. However, Myron Simpson, a 20 year old on the New Zealand National Team, attacked from the break with 3 km to go and showed great strength to hold off the rapidly closing pack. There were no GC changes.

1, Myron Simpson (New Zealand National Team) 3 hours 42 mins 44 secs
2, Tobyn Horton (Team Motorpoint) at 4 secs
3, Bastian Burgel (Thuringer Energie) st
4, Bernardo Riccio (D’Angelo & D’Antenucci) st
5, Jakob Steigmiller (Thuringer Energie) st

Stage 6 - Blarney to Tramore, 27th May 2011, 172 km

After 80 kms an elite group of 17 riders, including Bagdonas, in Yellow, second place man Oleksander Sheydyk (ISD - Lampre) and Nikolay Mihaylov (Aix en Provence) who was in third place overall, pulled clear of the bunch on a short climb. A number of other riders managed to chase back on, including Sam Bennett (An Post Sean Kelly), which brought the group up to 30.

63 km from the line, four riders attacked, Lachlann Norris (Drapac Cycling), Marcin Bialoblocki (Motorpoint), Anatoliy Pakhtusov (ISD Lampre) and Wouter Sybrandy (Sigma Specialized). They got clear and quickly started to pull out a lead. This spelled trouble for Bagdonas as Pakhtusov was only 2 mins 21 secs off the Yellow Jersey in 10th place and the leader only had one team mate with him. Fortunately Bennett put in a strong ride and helped to hold the gap down, and after he was exhausted Bagdonas had to put in a gritty ride himself.

Up front, Norris was dropped due to a puncture, and Bialoblocki smashed the other two in the charge to the line, opening a gap of a few seconds. Bagdonas just about held onto his Yellow Jersey.

Stage 7 - Tramore to Kildare, 27th May 2011, 161 km

Shane Archbold (New Zealand National Team) was wearing the Green points jersey. He was also sitting 9th on GC and, on Stage 7, the 22 year old decided that he wouldn't mind swapping Green for Yellow. He attacked right at the very start of the stage and got clear of the bunch. After a few kms he was joined by seven other riders and the group started to build a lead.

The An Post Sean Kelly Team again led the chase, doing the vast bulk of hte work. For a prolonged period, Archbold was leader on the road, but the peloton slowly reeled them in and with 35 km to go it looked as if they would be caught. With 27 km to go, Martyn Irvine (Asia Giant Kenda), Kohei Uchima (D’Angelo & D’Antenucci) and Casey Munro (Rapha Condor Sharp) attacked the break. Irvine attacked his companions with 10 km to go and rode solo to victory, just holding off the pack by 6 seconds.

Stage 8 - Kildare to Skerries, 28th May 2011, 133 km

Former Ras winner David McCann (Giant Kenda) and Tobyn Horton (Motorpoint) attacked after 40km and the two worked well together to hold a lead into the first lap of the final circuit around the seaside town of Skerries. McCann, the Irish national time trial champion, dropped Horton with two laps to go and continued solo. The peloton gradually eroded his lead, but he held on to win by 14 seconds. Shane Archbold won the pack sprint and finished second for the third time in the race.

This was an excellent race for the An Post Sean Kelly team, and Gediminas Bagdonas in particular, with the Lithuanian rider taking two stage victories and the overall. The team protected the jersey for six days, which is not an easy feat given that there is only five riders per team and also given the attacking, bordering on chaotic, way in which the Ras is ridden. It is the biggest race of the season for the team, as it's the preeminent stage race in their sponsor's home country and it's also sponsored by An Post.

Bagdonas was quoted in the Irish Examiner saying:

Gediminas Bagdonas said:
It has been a tough week but I enjoyed every moment, particularly this moment," he said as he donned the final yellow jersey of the week. "It was a good race but six days I am the leader and that&#8217]

Bagdonas is one of two Lithuanian riders who joined the Irish/Belgian squad at the beginning of the season, given a chance after performing well in lower tier domestic races in Belgium. Apparently Bagdonas was only selected for the Ras team after impressing the week before (he won the small Verrebroek-Beveren race).

It was also an excellent race for a very young New Zealand National Team, taking home a stage victory, the young rider's jersey and the points jersey, while also putting two men in the top 10 and having a day in Yellow. The Ukrainian ISD-Lampre squad took the Mountains jersey and had two men on the GC podium. The Asian Giant Kenda team had come to the race with one of the GC favourites, David McCann, but after he lost time they went stage hunting and won the final two.

The domestic teams had a tough time of it in a field that's been getting stronger. A number of good Continental squads now come to the Ras and are serious about winning it and the amateur domestic teams just aren't strong enough to compete with them over eight days. The Irishmen who featured prominently were almost all on the An Post Sean Kelly or Giant Kenda teams. Eastern European riders on the other hand had a great time of it, taking the first four places on GC, the Mountains jersey, and a number of stage wins.
