Cancellara's crash only hurts the sport. Both he and Boonen where on top form.
A Ballan-Cancellara escape would have have provided an epic chase.
Collerbones mend. So do fences. RSN's Gregory Rast finished fourth at PR last year. He was 11th yesterday despite RSN having to do most of the chasing after the Garmin mishap provided a false selection in the race.
I would put him in the second tier of contenders, but RSN still have someone who can win.

Perplexing is the Hog model for years was to buy strong riders who in their own right could win big races and have them work as super domestiques. Strangely these days Fabian is working alone for the most of his races. Yes I know he had a few riders around him when he fell but if you look at the work Terpstra and Chavanel were doing then Cancellara hardly has a team to match.
Its not much to ask for when you’re the best classics rider in the world to have some real support in the biggest races of the year.

Fuglsang not happy about the way RNT is being run. He says its run totally the way the old Radioshack team was run, and nothing like Leopard. He misses the teamspirit of Leopard where there was a close unity between riders, mechanics and the rest of the staff. He doesnt sound like a rider who will stick around next season.

After Cancellara's crash things seem to go from bad to worse. Classic campaign has been catastrophic after that. Andy's attack in FW was the epitome of pointlessness, Frank looked like he gave up after he had that flat. It is kind of sad that the best climbing results so far have come from granpa Horner.
Fuglsang has been plagued by crashes and in my opinion has never really lived up to his GC promise, and also has problems with the team. If Frank gets Giro leadership (which I'd like to see, if he actually tries to win it), then Jakob is a sure goner from the team next season.
So far, stronger team on paper than last year, for sure, but is it falling apart? Are they frustrated by the lack of results? And about the Tour, I was always a believer in Andy as a great threat, but if his TT does not improve the least bit then he will be in a lot of trouble against his more rounded opponents. What's more, Cancellara stated that helping out the brothers at the Tour won't be a priority in the Olympic year, and his injury can only reinforce that idea(an injury that is not healing smoothly, as he posted on his twitter).

Nothing more to add and 3rd at this year's Le Tour is the maximum.
I would have expected a great Giro from Jakob, but let's see how his crash troubled his preperation.
Possible success at Cali could be a small compensation.

I always thought LEOPARD TREK had a good team spirit. How much of that was true and how much was just publicity I don't know but to me it seemed mostly genuine. That's why to me the lack of high profile results didn't matter so much - it seemed like they all enjoyed racing together and so results were only a matter of time, as we saw in the Vuelta or Lombardia. Now they lack results as well as team spirit ....

At least those riders were all in good shape, like Bennati, Rast, Roulston and especially Gallopin. Those guys also seemed like a real unit to me - maybe that has something to do with Cancellara, it seems like he is a good leader who can rally up his troops. Plus he actually delivered two wins, that is always good for the morale as well. Now when you look at the rest of the team, no one seems in good shape. Horner was for a little while but not anymore. Klöden, Andy far from top shape. Fränk is decent but not as strong as usual this time a year. Machado and Gerdemann fail to get results at the smaller stage races. Recently Nelson Oliveira has shown some good results but the rest have mostly disappointed.

+1. This guy has done everything wrong that he possibly could. Last year he had a good team with a good spirit and good management. Of course not everything was perfect but that's normal and that's why you need to give it some time (cf. Sky). So this year he got the "pilot" that was missing (even though IMO Nygaard did a much better job than Bruyneel) but the plane still hasn't taken off yet
He thought with Bruyneel he could buy guaranteed success but failed to realize that in sports you can't buy success. Now Nygaard's new team is killing it and I'm very happy for him. Their budget must be a fraction of Radioshack's and they are kicking their butts in every race so farCancellator said:

I agree that the cobbled team is decent, but the only winner in there is Fabian. They can provide good support for plan A, but there is no plan B - Rast did not shine in Roubaix. Now if Bennati were a more dangerous sprinter... Also they gave the impression that they're over-reliant on Popo's work, he worked like a slave on the front of every race!

Good post Chrisy...re: this part. That is the trouble of rich folks owning a team, look at football as well. Most of them don't have patience at all.
