Saying 'well only zabriskie is a vegan..' is a bit like saying 'Only Lance rides a carbon bike, only Lemond uses aero bars, only Coppi eats cereal for breakfast, only japanese use shimano, only geeks use sti, only idiots use clip in pedals, only posers ride carbon soled shoes, only lazy people ride clinchers, only rich people ride carbon aero rims, only hollywood people have personal trainers, only Bill Gates has a lap top...

At one point in time you would be considered 'normal' by the status quo by saying the above. Now you would look like a damm fool! Mister T style!

If you want to get fit in life, its like cycling. You gotta smash the status quo mainstream redneck beliefs like you do climbs. Yeah its uncomfortable at the start but you'll get used to it.. ;)

Really don't you understand how off putting this approach is and how you distance yourself from what you say is your audience and your goal and ensures that anyone who does not already agree with you does not listen to your arguments due to the approach you take. By calling anyone who eats meat a mainstream redneck you immediately ensure that both you and your opinion are not taken serious

Also a normal and understandable question just to gain some insight is immediately answered with hostility and defensiveness

Except that nobody is offended by the video. They just think that Durianrider is narcisistic and preachy.

Surely some are offended. Maybe he is narcisistic and preachy at times..... who among us is so snow white pure that we have not said things in the same manner? None. We all do it all the time .... my point here is .... doesn't it get f'n old? It does for me. We cannot change anyone ..... but we have a choice on how we receive them. We can learn to shut off our drama based reactionary impulse and hear the facts of the message.

The massive assumption being made by yourself and a couple of others is that anyone who demonstrates a negative view in this thread is therefore an overweight unhappy meat-eater.

Martin, you've made this up. I take no sides in what a person eats, because I see us as human beings, not what we eat ... what we do .. or what we say. I'm trying in all sincerity here to shed some light our human insanity ..... the ways we all punish ourselves by the crap we say and believe about ourselves and others. It's all a big f'n lie .... and just keeps us stuck in the same ol' crap day after day. . . picture Bill Murray in Groundhog Day.

Tell me ..... how many times a day are people here offended, ****ed off, insulted, etc. on a daily basis? It cannot be counted. I wonder when people will have enough. Be free of the bullcrap. What would life be like without all the drama? Give it a thought.

So who the f' am I to come here and say this, right? Just who? I'm no one. A fellow human who sees the futility of it, see the damage it does to ourselves, our families, our loved ones, strangers we see on the street and the very environment where we all live. How much longer can we continue this madness?

While I appreciate your passion for us humans to get along and hear what we have to say/share...I'm truly baffled by your ardent support for durianrider's "message", which has been summed up nicely so many times over in this thread.

It just seems to me to be a bit misplaced is all.

Of note is the simple fact that the only one addressing anyone's feedback to durianrider (which I might add he solicited) is you, while he continues to ignore that feedback and continues to blunder along with statements of "challenging the status quo", and "true leadership" for his reasons for coming across so artfully as a pompous snob...

I'd close by saying I take no issue with your basic premise; I think they are valid if taken outside of this context.

Only Dave Zabriskie is a full time vegan.

Cadel, Lance, Basso, Contador, Hamilton eat vegan when they want to cut weight. You know when guys like this are doing it and dont give an f about the animals/planet that there is something in it.

But that question is like someone having a bling madone 10 years ago and saying 'this is the bomb!' and someone saying 'how many pro riders ride a madone with carbon wheels and 11 speed mate? Your crazy!'

Does that make sense?

Einstein (vegetarian) said that the thinking that got us here today isnt the same thinking that will carry us to the future.

30 years ago people ate steak before a race. I was talking with Allan Pieper and Perry from HTC today and they said 'last night the guys ate steaks and fcuk knows how they can ride properly..'

Someone still does.

The starstruck Astana team riders can now have the chance to tell their grandchildren the day they got to train with with durianrider.

Suffice to say Dave Zabriskie is currently my favourite cyclist - his twitter feed just cracks me up. genuinely funny guy and a class rider despite being a vegan.

Thanks for your answer, durianrider. How long has Zabriskie been a vegan?

Your analogy with the bling Madone does make sense. You seem to be saying that a vegan diet is where it's at but most professional cyclists think that you're crazy because no vegan has yet won the Tour de France. Additionally, being vegan is the way of the future, but it's just too futuristic to be taken seriously right now.

Did I get that right?

Are Allan Peiper and Perry from HTC vegan?

Perry said to me yesterday 'Im not a vegan but I hardly ever eat meat as it just sits to heavy in the stomach'. Allan Pieper is a long time vegetarian that occasionally eats dairy/eggs. He is leaner than most of the pro peleton.

Cannondale brought out integrated bottom brackets and oversized steerers ages ago but everyone said 'thats too 'extreme' you gotta stay with traditional stuff..'

Same with coloured tyres, lycra vs wool, steel hubs vs alloy, laced shoes vs straps/speed dials etc.

Old habits die hard and its up to people that aint afraid to live each day with an open mind. People say "Harley, you need to keep your mind open mate!" I say 'hey! Im the one thats made the big changes and your still doing the same crap all your life! What do you mean bud?!'

As for LIT's comment: We can learn to shut off our drama based reactionary impulse and hear the facts of the message. I couldnt agree more.

Ive developed the art of not taking things to personally and I cant recommend it enough. Its made life so much easier and fun. Its none of my business what other people really think of me at the end of the day.

Anyways, here is a photo from 2 days ago. Ive just dropped my chain and trying to get it back on. http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/ipad/drivers-and-riders-need-to-get-along/story-fn6bqphm-1225985844472

Mate,
I think that part in bold is the entire crux of 80% of this thread. I think your message is potentially a great one that is being damaged by its delivery. You seem to chose to believe that anyone that doesn't think its great that you just run off at the mouth and say whatever insulting thing you like, is actually doing so because they think that meat is the way to go.

The drama in all this is injected by you in the first place. Contrary to your claims, it isn't really a good thing because it doesnt provoke healthy debate, it instead promotes derision that undermines the actual truth. As someone pointed out, the only people who seem to support your view on this site are already vegetarian if not vegan. So the message is just preaching to the converted.

To use your comments - most people start listening to you with an open mind. But then its you that slams the door in their face.

A case in point is one of many comments in the video that started this thread. You say that the receptionist at the hotel said she wanted to lose a few pounds and your words are "yeah about 30kilos". Whether that is a valid assessment or not is irrelevant. There is nothing about that statement that doesn't instantly paint you as an arrogant *******.

I just think it would be a great idea to do a bit of objective assessment of what you are trying to get across. If you did so I think you would find a much more welcoming and supportive environment to use as a platform for getting the message out there.

Team Astana member telling his grandkids 'I went out training one day and this really fit vegan was with us and I checked his website out and learned that you can prevent/reverse heart disease by following a low fat, high carb vegan lifestyle and I did and thats why Im alive today to share this story with you kiddies!'

http://www.pcrm.org has all the details.

Sadly I do get a lot of pm's from people on this forum requesting more information about how to eat healthy etc but they feel scared that they will get abused like I do if they request it openly.

So perhaps people can keep ruthless personal attacks against me on this thread then.

Given that you are talking about a professional cyclist, here's another more likely version:

Harley, its entirely up to you but the facts as I see them are that you write here painting a massive target on your chest and then act afronted when people take the very obvious odd pot-shot. So in essence it is you that has created the environment where somone who is interested in talking to you about your lifestyle is worried to do so in public. What you do with that situation is up to you but lets be clear - I am not attacking you personally, I am mererly pointing out a deficiency in your delivery. I do not recall every writing a post in one of your threads that argued in favour of an animal based diet. (but I wouldnt mind if it turns out I did do so as I am open minded enough to discuss all options).

I hope that your rides with groups of people who are already on high carb low fat diets meets your aim of converting people to veganism. :D

How to pack your bicycle for airlines..

I get this request all the time..'Harley, a youtube video showing you how you ship your bike mate!!'.

Ok! Here it is finally!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SY_Y8SkPMDM

I travel all over the globe with my bike. Having a bike is the BEST way to get around and meet locals and really EXPERIENCE the cultures out there.

Feel free to share your bike packing tips as well.

I've always relied on raw vegetal material for padding, especially when returning from trips to Jamaica or Mexico.

What I'm wondering is when will durianrider take a pull?
He appears to be wheelsucking Astana in one photo and pulling a Schleck behind BMc in another.

The only thing that I have gotten from threads like this is that going vegan must have a high probability of turning people into egotistical douchebags.

Every single post from this guy is I, I , I. The main purpose of his posting seems to be to inform everyone which pro he talked to last or what team allowed him to tag along at the back. Heck, he cannot even write a simple post about how to pack a bike for flying on a plane without pretending that he is some sort of famous guru.

Yeah, sure you do. Let me clue you in on an obvious fact. No one gives a damn what you personally eat (or anyone else for that matter) anymore than they care what toilet paper you use or whether you hang right or left. If you want to survive on a diet of 100% Captain Crunch, no one cares. If you want to write posts that give reasonable facts instead of the type of preaching that would scare a Mormon then people might consider what you have to say. I probably wouldn't because I don't like taking advice from self promoting, intolerably smug jerks. Most other people don't either.

There is no way that meets current aspect ratio requirements. It is also too heavy to be propelled by veganpower.
