It doesn't matter, unless we want to compare riders from different eras.
When talking about the greatest, it definitely matters what you won and what it comes down to in the end.

Other stuff is just subjective. People will always have their own "great" .

You have to sum it up with what the biggest wins were and nobody will ever beat Merckx in that department.

Merckx is an absolute anomaly whatever era you compare him with. Hard to think he would be anything but good today imo.

Nobody compares as a one-day rider and the ones that come closest where nowhere close to (regularly) winning GT's.
Meanwhile the best of the best GT riders are on par with him at best and were nowhere close in one-day races.

Yeah this is basically what Pogacar is doing now.

The '70s (and to some degree the '80s) were also known for having a multitude of riders achieving a trophy case (or at least having incredible years) that other eras couldn't: De Vlaeminck, Hinault, Kelly, Moser, Maertens, Gimondi, ...

This is used as a way of discrediting Merckx because other riders from his era also dominate the all-time rankings (as a distant 2nd to him but still). But today's era is shaping up to be much of the same with Pogacar, Van der Poel and Evenepoel having consecutive seasons with combinations of wins we hadn't seen in decades.
