Pog can certainly sit in a small final group, but can he win the sprint in a group like this? I don't think he will have the acceleration on Poggio to get away alone. 35 km/h plus on Poggio is far from the same as 20 km/h in the long mountain climbs in GTs and one-week races.

Would like to see once what Van der Poel in absolute peak shape could do on Poggio. How much time could he gain before the descent?

Edit: Must point out, as I do every year, that I still want to see how it would effect the race if they did some minor route changes. Especially substituting Cipressa with Pompeiana.

I would prefer route changes before the Capi, at the top of my list would be the reintroduction of Le Mànie (and Bric Berton), alternatively to go over Colle San Bernardo. A symbolic added distance that would make the total length over 300 km would be welcome too.

Would that mean that you reach the coast via San Bernardo instead of Turchino?

I would prefer that they added a possible point of attack before Poggio. Cipressa is to easy and the gradients to gentle to fulfil that purpose. Pompeiana would mean that the flat section before Poggio is reduced from 9 to about 4,5 km and the steepest part of Pompeiana is about 9-10 % over 400m, making it a much more suitable climb to attack than Cipressa.

The problem I have with Pompeiana righe bfore the Poggio is that it reduces the chances of sprinters surviving to less than 1%.
And having sprinters in the mix is one of the things I really like about Sanremo.

Yep, it reduces their chances. But right now the events of the race is extremely predictable. There will be a big attack at the top of Poggio, and all the suspense is if this attack is caught or not. So we're talking about the last 2-3 km of Poggio, the descent and then the last flat 2,5km with a possibility of action. Adding Pompeiana would possibly making it more unpredictable.

An alternative to La Manie, could be this climb. The first 6 km of this, up to Colle di Caso before descending to Alassio. It would also add about 15 km to the race, making it over 300 km.

Yes.

Le Mànie has allowed significant developments before Poggio, and it keeps endurance as the most important quality. A good alternative to Le Mànie closer to the finish would be La Crocietta(?) at Alassio. Civezza is even closer, but with Cipressa immediately afterwards, it would be too selective imho.
