Rewatched 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) after some 40+ years, as a kid I thought it was magical. As an adult I still think it's magical, but it gives you some intellectual stuff to think about as well. So it's not just a Disney movie for kids. The sets are just marvelous, I don't think modern CGI can compare. The only thing I would cut out is Kirk Douglas' musical numbers (they're just too cutesy for my increasingly grumpy, aging self), but otherwise this sci-fi classic still holds up well. It's an absolute must-see for fans of sci-fi movies.

Btw., Jules Verne was such a visionary, things people only dared to imagine centuries ago are now reality.

I found it on DVD a couple years ago and bought. I've watched it since, but at this point it has been a couple of years. However, I still prefer that version to the newer version. I agree about cutting down on the musical numbers.

Halloween : Resurrection(2002) No surprise it was 16 years before Jamie Lee Curtis decided to return to a Halloween movie after this mess. I guess the cash cow was too enticing in the end. One of the worst sequels which is saying something. Was glad to see the credits come up...............

I often watch, when I am channel surfing, things like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea for just the special effects and costumes..most of the set designs from the 50s,60's,,70's I find fascinating. When I was living in NYC I knew lots of people in the TV business and a few that did steady film work..I was pretty close to a union carpenter, she got me into production and shooting on Boardwalk Empire shoots. There has been lots of "news" about deep fake video. Long before the current news, I saw w my own eyes what carpenters, painters( should always be called artists)lighting people, make up artists can do..that doesn't include the ever evolving and amazing work done by special effects magicians..
So when I see stuff like Earthquake..or 70's disaster movies I watch w a big grin..Jaws and Jaws 2 hold up pretty well..saw snips of Mrs. Doubtfire and Tootsie recently..fun movies..
Anyone who works with wood, buys lots of wood would be heartbroken if you saw dumpster after dumpster after dumpster of tossed sets for movies and TV..Law and Order holds the record for long crime drama..beating out Gunsmoke..they also probably have killed more trees than any TV show in history!!

Thanks for the great insight about sets and stuff, I often lament seeing cars and various structures being blown up during the shooting of a film. I'm thinking those were perfectly good (new) cars, no wonder the budget can run into the gazillions.

Speaking of sets - none of the sets from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea exist anymore. Apparently at some point they were on display or part of a ride in Disneyland or the like, but they were demolished because modern times required updating. Such a waste, some sets are truly iconic and should be preserved or at the very least reused, methinks.

The Tunnel (2019) - A low-budget Norwegian disaster thriller about a fuel truck crashing and blowing up deep inside a tunnel thereby causing all kinds of death and mayhem, it was okay. The latter parts got a bit silly and sentimental, but for the most part it was actually believable that such a thing could occur.

My biggest beef was with the English dubbing because there was no other way to watch the movie, it was just too stupid. I avoid dubbed versions of movies as much as I can, give me English subtitles with the original sound any time!

I agree I find it almost impossible now to watch dubbed movies usually because it is so out of synch........

Deep Red (1975) classic 70s Italian horror. Visually great as is Argento's strength as a filmmaker and the performances were better than his usual fare as was the script. His movies got loopier and loopier with a drop off in quality but he was big news in the horror/thriller genre at least in the 70s and 80s. Compared to Halloween Resurrection this is a masterpiece...............

I hate that you can tell that it's just some voices in a studio with the dubbed versions, and sometimes those voices are a little iffy. Also, the dubbed score/soundtrack in the Norwegian Tunnel movie didn't fit at all. I mean, I'm sure there are some Norwegians who appreciate listening to some generic (American) country music, but for the most part it's not something I would expect to hear in a movie that involves snowy mountains in Scandinavia.

Something that I don't think has been done and inspired from reading the Superhero thread, with this being something I am sure everyone of us has done for a film. is say what you would change about it. The change could be small details that you would add in that the theatrical addition couldn't have due to time or they just didn't think of it. Or it could be on the other end of the spectrum and you want to change everything.
In the spirit of things, I will start with a film series I think about a lot every time I watch it which is Star Wars. Now I am a huge Star Wars fan and think each movie could have had many different things to make them better. Now I won't go over each film, unless this is successful and wanted, but I will start with what at the time was the most controversial film in the sage, The Phantom Menace (1999). Some of these are things I have thought of, extended scenes that were cut, or were in the novel from the script. I will have them in chronological order through the film.
  1. For the film opening while the Republic delegation ship was arriving to Naboo I would have shown a brief practice sparing match between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. Nothing crazy, similar to Qui-Gon vs Darth Maul in length but something to wet everyone's appetite and show we are seeing far different Jedi then shown in the Original Trilogy. I think this would be a warmer opening as well into the "delegation meeting" and likens to A New Hopes battle opening instead of just docking in the Trade Federation battlestation.
  2. Introduce Jango Fett on Tatooine. I think a good spot would be after Anakin, Jar Jar, and Sebulba interact. It could be similar to Han and Greedo but with Jango firing first and killing the target for Jabba bounty and Qui-Gon can notice him. Or Jango is at the bar/restaurant in his armor and Qui-Gon inquires about him and Anakin answers that he is a very famous and deadly bounty hunter. Jango notices Qui-Gon and company while realizing he is a Jedi. (He wasn't picked as the clone template for no reason.
  3. During the podrace have Jango kill a rival and other favorite for the victory from a Jabba bounty because Jabba wants Sebulba to win due to betting. They already showed Jabba at the podrace and it's supposed to be like poetry. Father and son working for Jabba. Jango realizes and figures out Qui-Gon and company are from Naboo through Watto and he knowing the Trade Federation has a bounty on their heads. Jango confronts them and a short fight ensues between Jango and Qui-Gon with Jango escaping. (This to establish Jango is not one to be messed with for later films and Qui-Gon can hold his own to show for the rest of the movie and make his death bigger).
  4. When Anakin and Qui-Gon are leaving to head back to the ship, keep the scene of Qui-Gon noticing and destroying the probe droid from Darth Maul which inspires them to hurry back to the ship in order to leave the planet. Then show a different droid coming to Maul and him heading off after them.
View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeTelNwk-uk

5 Keep the extended scene between Qui-Gon vs Darth Maul with Maul jumping on the ship walkway with a brief fight before Qui-Gon knocks Maul back to the ground.
View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=watvoAn2ui8

  1. Introduce Grievous as a senator prerobot from a war cultural planet who is at odds with Naboo's peaceful culture. Grievous will side with the Trade Federation's senator. This will give Padme a rival for Attack of the Clones for the talks against arming for the Separatist movement, This will also show how someone can go from humanoid to cyborg when he is shown as he is in Revenge of the Sith.
  2. Introduce and have Count Dooku on the Jedi Council. Dooku can be shown of his attachment with Qui-Gon and side with him about training Anakin or Dooku finishing training Ob-Wan. Further have Qui-Gon and Dooku privately talk about Anakin more and have Qui-Gon bring up Jango. Show Dooku even wanting to send more Jedi or personally go with them back to Naboo and this request be denied by Mace and Yoda. This will not only reinforce Dooku's being disheartment with the Jedi and the Jedi Council but also give Dooku and Darth Sidious the candidate for their clone template.
  3. Give more time to the rest of the Jedi Council to speak, this is a council after all.
  4. Show Dooku and Senator Palpatine as friends and conversing later that day about how Dooku doesn't agree with the council's decision and about Anakin potentially being the chosen one. This can be further reinforced when Sidious and Maul are speaking on Coruscant Maul can tell Sidious that a child powerful in the force was leaving with Qui-Gon. This is how Sidious can plot for his next 2 apprentices.
  5. Keep the extended dual between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan vs Darth Maul.
View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Uvad9uSc9k&t=52s

11. At Qui-Gon's funeral show Dooku visibly upset about it. At the end have Dooku talking with Palpatine and showing his disenlightenment with the Jedi Order and Palpatine slowly turning his thoughts to the Dark Side.

End movie. All in all I think this would add about 10-15 minutes to the movie run time. I hope you guys enjoyed it.

Wow, you have put a lot of thought into Star Wars.

I'm not much of a Star Wars fan myself, I've only seen the first three movies a long, long time ago. (All I remember is having had a crush on Luke Skywalker back then - don't judge me!) But keep posting whatever strikes your fancy, I'm sure most people here have seen at least some of the Star Wars movies more recently, they would be able to discuss their various merits.

It’s one of my favorite series along side Lord of the Rings. But even if you’ve only seen the movies once, I feel like it flows evenly like that instead of always introducing random characters like it’s a superhero comic. Builds the audience up more.

I've seen the original Star Wars trilogy tons of times. The movies after that are another story. You put a lot of time into how to make those movies flow better.

There is one deleted scene I do wish Rush would have included as it would have helped make more sense of the scene where Lauda goes to one back to get a loan. The deleted scene was a banker at the bank his father was a board member telling him they weren't allowed to give him a loan.

Star Wars lost me midway through the second trilogy. The Alien franchise started to go off the boil after the third movie, the last Predator movie I saw was a mess and the Terminator franchise went downhill fast after the third movie. I thought the first Resident Evil was not too bad but after seeing the first sequel I lost interest. Be interested to see what they do with the new Dune movies coming out soon and also the proposed Alien TV series.

Attack of the Clones

  1. I would open how the Boba Fett "The Fight to survive" does with Jango and Boba doing a bounty together and Boba helping and being taught by Jango. Jango and Boba to head back to Kaminoo and receive a message from Darth Tyranus about Senator Padme's assassination. Jango to accept and contact Zam as it is a big job. Then the film to open with Padme's attempted assassination.
  2. Padme to argue with Grievous about making an army for the Republic to fight the Separatists. The senate to vote in support of Padme which leads to Grievous and his planet ceding from the Republic and joining the Separatists movement.
  3. Fix the conversation between Obi-Wan and Jocasta Nu in regards to Count Dooku as Obi-Wan will already know about his relation to Qui-Gon. Further clean up Dooku and Obi-Wan's conversation because of this.
  4. Anakin telling Palpatine about the visions of his mother. Palpatine to be shown as his father figure and be manipulative towards him to be against the Jedi. Anakin to speak with Yoda as well with Yoda basically having the conversation they had in Revenge of the Sith in regards to his mother. This to start bringing conflict within him and starting towards the Dark Side.
  5. Keep the deleted scenes of Anakin and Padme together on Naboo. and Obi-Wan and Mace Windu debating what to do.
View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRzjyqh-akY

  1. When Anakin and Padme enter the droid facility, have during it Anakin fighting with Jango and that is how he gets his lightsaber destroyed. This will build up Jango as being very deadly and efficient to foreshadow the clones efficiency and surprise of his death.
  2. Grievous to be gravely injured during the arena battle after the Jedi arrive. Either by Mace or another member of the council. Grievous should lose his limbs and have his chest crushed by the force to facilitate his transformation into a cyborg and why he has his cough.
  3. Jango to have a slightly longer battle with Mace that adds the deleted scene to his death. At the end of the scene showing Boba holding Jango's helmet, have him put it on.
View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATfh2ADiqrY

  1. Show more Jedi fighting and dying in the arena.
  2. Use more extended angles on Dooku fighting Anakin and Obi-Wan versus the close ups of their faces they had.
  3. Anakin speaking to Palpatine about his mother's death with Palpatine and him further undermining the Jedi and stating he caught bravely against Dooku. Then have a fast forward to Dooku and Sidious conversing about Anakin and how he caught with anger and showing Dooku not thinking highly of Anakin but Sidious stating he will be very powerful.

The Wave (2015) - I should probably finish watching this Norwegian natural disaster drama before I comment on it, but from what I've read of the reviews it just devolves into a predictable and silly disaster flick, so I probably won't finish watching it. What is marvelous about The Wave is the scenery though - mountains, fjords, heaven! Norway has truly been blessed geographically, which is why I want to watch more Norwegian movies even if they completely stink.

Suspiria (1977) probably Dario Argento's most overrated movie. Outstanding visuals as usual and art design with an over the top soudntrack but it hasn't aged very well compared to some of his other movies and there is little to no suspense. A horror curiousity but I don't think its one of his best movies.

No Way Out (1987) - Rewatched this political thriller after many years, it's okay. I think the scenes with Sean Young are too long and there are too many, would have preferred more spy and political intrigue action. But the cast is stellar with the likes of Gene Hackman, Fred Thompson, George Dzundza, Kevin Costner, and even a couple of brief scenes with Iman. If you're longing for the 80s the fashion and the hair is definitely there also.

Also partially rewatched The Russia House (1990), being it's a bit slow I fell asleep. But once again the cast is stellar with Sean Connery, Michelle Pfeiffer, Roy Scheider, John Mahoney, and Klaus Maria Brandauer, and the scenery is marvelous. I think this is one of the first movies that had been filmed in Russia with the Russian government's blessing due to Glasnost, the shots of Moscow and St. Petersburg are spectacular.

This must be the original because I remember seeing the one from 2018, I believe you had mentioned the latter in this thread a while back. I remember the stunning costumes, and if I think I little more I would probably remember more.

How does the remake compare to the original?

Totally different movies which is why some fans hated the remake. The original was much shorter and more violent, a bit bonkers but in a different way to the remake. Argento's movies rarely had coherent scripts but visually some of them were outstanding.

Was watching Inglorious Bastards again. It was on TV. It's a Quentin Tarrantino movie for reference. Some of his movies I like, other ones I hate. This is one I like well enough to watch if it's on and I don't have anything better to do. Of course it also helps that two of my favorite actors are in it. I was a fan of Micheal Fassbender before this movie was released. This is the movie that really introduced me to Daniel Brühl. Although Daniel had a small part in Bourne Ultimatum, this is the movie that really introduced him to the US audience. It is a strange movie, but that should be expected being it's a Tarrantino movie.

It's been a while since I've seen it, I remember admiring Christoph Waltz's assets. (Don't judge me!)

For a small bit of clarification to the above comment. My husband at times will ask me if I think a guy (usually actor sometimes an athlete) is good looking. Yes, we both will sometimes say something if we think someone is good looking or cute or whatever. The humor is more the fact Daniel was playing a Nazi in that movie than the fact I made the comment about him being cute. Now after seeing him more movies and shows I love him.
