Never let your opponents get comfy, keep them guessing, do something nontraditional just because you can. :) I definitely don't think it is because he is weak or anything...

Probably just trying to throw the cat amongst the pigeons and create some confusion in the bunch... and it kinda worked

Yeah. Was my guess also although a bit odd with so far out. A rather cool maneuver if you've right and a shame it wasnt streamed.

Movistar and Tinkoff can do something with this kind of moves. Stages 13, 14 and 16 welcome long range attacks. A good long rage attack on stage 20 can also win you the race.

If Tinkoff and Movistar can stretch out the pack enough as they reportedly did today, Nairo and Contador can get in a break, hopefully with 2-3 teammates each. It would take some time before the teams (stretched out by Tinkoff and Movistar boys) organize themselves to start chasing, so the break can get a decent starting advantage. Add Ryder Hesjedal, Chaves/Yates and one of the 3 Belkin guys to the break, so you get rid of Garmin, Orica and Belkin having to do the chasing (these are strong chasing teams). Sky will never now what hit them. There is Katusha helping them too, but they have already been fooled once 2 years ago by a similar move.

If the break is caught, no problem. Valverde will have the numbers advantage, as the teams doing the chasing will have burnt all their matches.

Not when you have the guy in your avatar in the race. And also a focused, opportunist, ruthless Colombian awaiting the passing of the torch :D

Believe me good sir it would be my greatest wish for this race. Thing is Froome will follow Contador/Quintana always. They'll never get away in a break.

I highly doubt he can follow Froome and Contador, Quintana has not been as strong as he was last year at any point. He was stronger in the TDF than winning the Giro.

Bit of a sweeping statement there - 'at any point'; numbers-wise Montecampione was on about on par with Semnoz, both impressive performances.

Wheelsucked Purito all the way to Contador's wheel, quite impressive.

He probably couldn't because of his leader still in red...

He was one of the first to respond to contador's attack though

He is strong enough to win this Vuelta. He also wheelsucked (Pozzovivo) in the first serious mountain stage in Giro this year.

Glad to see Nairito doing well. He said recently the annoying hot weather had wore him down a bit, so I was no surprised at all see him perform better today. He will lose the Rojo jersey on Tuesday, which is good for him and the team no to carry that burden en the next couple days before the real mountain stages arrive, and by then he will be stronger to challenge contador & froome :)

pardon me- I reckon it was Nairito who took off and Purito responded. ;)
its a different matter of perception since BOTH chased down Contador-yes Purito seem to have pulled more than Quintana, but so what? that's cycling.

He had no competition, this is on a completely different level. Where is Uran? Nuff said...

Quintana should be very strong on Covadonga, Farrapona and Ancares. But the question is how much time he will lose in the TT (especially to Contador and Froome maybe). It could be something about a minute. If so he will have problems with catching Contador.
